THIS WEEKEND IN MEN'S BASKETBALL... Upper Iowa will hit the road this weekend as the Peacocks kick off the final month of the NSIC regular season. First, UIU will face the Dragons of MSU Moorhead (14-4, 10-4 NSIC) in Moorhead on Friday night at 8 p.m. Then on Saturday, the Peacocks will take on the Wolves of Northern State (14-6, 9-5 NSIC) at 7 p.m.
LEADING THE DRAGONS... Urbane Bigham (11.9 ppg, 45% FG, 4.1 rpg), Jordan Riewer (11.4 ppg, 3.3 rpg, 3.6 apg, 0.9 spg), Tarrell Clark (11.2 ppg, 7.4 rpg, 1.3 spg), Tyler Vaughn (8.9 ppg, 41% 3FG, 2.7 rpg)
LEADING THE WOLVES... Seth Bachand (12.4 ppg, 61% FG, 5.4 rpg, 1.25 bpg), Tydan Storrusten (11.3 ppg, 3 rpg, 3.4 apg, 1 spg), Skye Warwick (11.1 ppg, 45% 3FG, 2.2 rpg), Trent Zomer (10.8 ppg, 6 rpg, 1.9 apg, 1.5 bpg)
THE SERIES... The Peacocks and Dragons have met 14 times over the past nine seasons. With a nine-point victory last year at home, UIU tied its series with MSUM, 7-7. It's a series that seems dependent on home-court advantage. The home team has won four of the last five, but that's bad news for UIU. MSUM holds a 9-0 record at home this year. UIU and NSU have also met 14 times over the last nine years, but the Wolves hold a commanding 13-1 advantage in the series. The Peacocks' lone victory over NSU came back in January of 2011 at home in a thrilling 58-57 upset.
NUMBER 1 IS #2 IN THE NSIC... Redshirt-senior
Joey Woods is number two in the league in passing. The Naples, Florida native is handing out 4.8 assists per game, which is second only to Zach Monaghan of MSU. While Monaghan earned the No. 4 ranking in all of Division II, Woods sits at 51st in the country. The Peacock guard is also tied for 7th in the NSIC with 16.1 points per game and 7th with 1.6 steals per contest.
WOULD YOU LIKE YOUR "PAGEL" TOASTED... Junior guard
Bo Pagel started to heat up this past weekend for the Peacocks. Coming off the bench the Sumner, Iowa native averaged 13.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.5 steals against MSU and CU. Pagel also totaled a .500 shooting clip from beyond the arc as he hit more threes than any other Peacock (4-for-8 from deep).
SCORE SOME MORE... As a unit, the Peacocks enter this weekend as the fourth-highest scoring offense in the league and the 67th ranked offense in the country. Four players are averaging double-figures for UIU and three of them are ranked in the top-25 in the league (Woods - 7th,
Josh Weeber -21st,
Grant Lang - 25th). The Peacocks are also 5-2 when they lead at the half. Compare that with a 3-10 mark and you can see why a fast start is key for a UIU victory.
LAST WEEK...
For the Dragons... MSUM's
Jordan Riewer had a big week in helping the Dragons to two key road wins. The junior from Staples, Minn., averaged 17.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists for the week from his point guard position. Riewer was a perfect 12-of-12 from the free throw line and shot 52.6 percent (10-of-19) from the field. Riewer had 14 points, five rebounds and three assists in a 76-71 win over Minnesota Duluth on Friday and followed with a 21-point, four-assist effort in a 95-88 overtime win over St. Cloud State on Saturday. Riewer also had a 3.5 assist to turnover ratio for the week. For the season Riewer is averaging 11.4 points and 3.7 assists per game. Senior Tarell Clark had another solid week for MSUM in helping them to road wins at Minnesota Duluth and St. Cloud State. Clark averaged 11.5 points and 10.0 rebounds for the week and shot 60 percent from the field.
For the Wolves... Northern State returns home this weekend after a four-game road trip in which they finished 2-2. The Wolves host Winona State Friday night at 8:00 and Upper Iowa at 7 p.m. Saturday. By the time Friday rolls around, NSU will have had 20 days in between home games. Northern is 1-2 against Winona State under Head Coach Paul Sather and are 2-1 against the Peacocks. The Wolves split this past weekend, losing at St. Cloud State 79-71 and winning a thrilling battle over Minnesota Duluth 80-78. Carter Evans scored a career-high 13 points off the bench to lead Northern. Seth Bachand also had 13 in the win. Tydan Storrusten dished-out a career-best nine assists in the loss to the Huskies.
