THIS WEEK IN PEACOCK WRESTLING… The Peacocks will open their Northern Sun Conference schedule Friday night versus the Dragons of Minnesota State University Moorhead. Upper Iowa will take the mat after having claimed seventh place at the NWCA National Duals in Des Moines, Iowa last weekend. Meanwhile, the Dragons are coming off an upset on the road to begin their NSIC slate. MSU Moorhead defeated Minnesota State University, Mankato on Thursday night by a 24-16 count.
PEACOCKS IN THE POLLS... Upper Iowa is currently ranked 8th in the latest NWCA Top 20 Poll and four individuals are also ranked in the top 8 in the nation. The ranked Peacocks are Carl Broghammer (197, #2), Blake Sorensen (184, #4), Edwin Cooper (149, #5) and Logan Hopp (HWT, #7).
DÉJÀ VU FOR COOPER... The Northern Sun Conference handed out their weekly awards on Monday and 149-pounder Edwin Cooper was named the NSIC Wrestler of the Week for the second time this season. UIU's nationally-ranked newcomer posted a perfect 5-0 record this past weekend including four wins by fall and led the NCAA Division II field in pins as his four totaled 5:37. In the only match that Cooper did not put six team points on the board, he lined up against the #1 ranked wrestler at 149 pounds from Central Oklahoma, Jordan Basks. With the match tied 4-4 late in the final period, Cooper scored a takedown and three nearfall points to claim the 9-4 victory. The five wins improve his record to 28-2 this season with 16 falls, a tech fall and 3 major decisions.
CARL'S COUNTDOWN... Redshirt senior Carl Broghammer has posted 127 wins in his four-year career and is just ten wins shy of taking over the all-time lead in wins at Upper Iowa. Hall of Famer Cliff Thompson currently holds the mark at 136 wins. The Manchester, Iowa native is 27-2 this season with 16 wins by fall, 2 by tech fall and 2 by major decision. His 16 pins are tied with Edwin Cooper for the team-high and the pair lead all of NCAA Division II in that category.
HOPP TO IT... Redshirt freshman Logan Hopp made his debut to the national rankings this week at #7 after a 4-1 weekend at the National Duals that included an upset of Cody Dauphin (#8 NWCA) of Central Oklahoma. The Peacock heavyweight is 21-10 and has won 10 of his last 12 matches. Hopp has 7 wins by fall and three major decisions this season.
