Jason Carlson congratulated his team after they matched Lindenwood stride for stride in Fayette and tied the undefeated Lions; Jordan Bell (pictured) was a big reason why the match was so close as he earned 12 saves in the game.

Recap

As time in the second overtime period expired, the Upper Iowa Men's Soccer bench didn't know whether to clap or not. They looked to their coach Jason Carlson for confirmation and with a nod, they began to cheer.

The confusion was part of a back-and-forth battle between MIAA foe Lindenwood University and the Peacocks, which ultimately resulted in a 0-0 tie after double-overtime.

Carlson considered it a win for his program because they were the underdogs, the Peacocks were supposed to lay down to the defending conference champions. The Lions entered Sunday afternoon's matchup with a 7-0 record, while the Peacocks sat at .500 (3-3).

The Lions showed why they were undefeated up to this point and they had the upper hand offensively, but from the get-go the Peacock defense came ready to play. In all, Lindenwood attempted 42 shots compared to just 14 for UIU.

Yet, the Peacocks protected their net as if their lives depended on it.

The Lions were held without a goal in 110 minutes of action and placed just 13 shots on goal – a .309 shots-on-goal percentage. Compare that with UIU's 0.928 shots-on-goal percentage and you can see why the Peacocks might have had the upper hand.

The Peacocks only had one shot that wasn't placed on-frame.

UIU nearly stole a victory as the match went into the first overtime period. In the 96th minute, Andres Cuesta controlled a pass form Rafael Pedroso in front of the net, but he couldn't seal the deal as he just barely missed the net. The UIU bench erupted, but the excitement died down quickly as they realized the ball went wide left.

For the defense, it was UIU's second shutout this season, with the other coming against Viterbo back on Sept. 19. Goalkeeper Jordan Bell was stellar in between the frame facing a barrage of shots from Lindenwood and adding 12 saves to his stat line.

The 0-0 tie keeps the Peacocks undefeated at home this year.

Things got chippy late in the game as Lindenwood missed a penalty kick in the 83rd minute. The shot ricocheted off the right post and after the ball was cleared the teams got physical. The referees handed out seven cards in the game, including one after that skirmish. The Peacocks were charged with two yellow cards.

Stat of the Game

Lindenwood's 42 shots is the most by any school since the Peacocks entered Division II play before the 2006 season. The record was previously held by Lewis College, which attempted 39 shots on August 29, 2007.

Up Next

The Peacocks will now look ahead to two more quality MIAA opponents as they host Harding University and Northeastern State in Fayette. UIU's showdown with the Bison is set for Friday at 1 p.m., while they host the River Hawks at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
