THIS WEEK IN PEACOCK SOCCER… Upper Iowa (3-3) opened this week's action on the road with a 3-2 loss to Mt. Mercy after a second-half comeback fell short. The loss dropped the Peacocks record to 3-3 overall. The Peacocks will open conference play in the MIAA today against the Bearcats of Southwest Baptist University. The Bearcats come in having lost all 8 of their contests and have been outscored 35-9. On Sunday, UIU will return to the pitch at Pattison Field to take on the Lions of Lindenwood University at 1 p.m.

LAST YEAR'S MATCHES... The Peacocks split a pair of matches with Southwest Baptist last season. Upper Iowa took the first match on the road in Bolivar, Mo., 3-2, thanks to goals by Rafael Pedroso, Jared Devine and Alan Martinez. Martinez scored the game winner in the 79th minute. At home, it was the Bearcats who stole the show winning, 4-1. Upper Iowa got on the scoreboard in the 7th minute, but SBU scored four second half goals to race away with the victory. The Peacocks dropped both matches to the Lions of Lindenwood University last season by a score of 1-0. The Peacocks held the Lions scoreless in both of the first periods last season, but they were ultimately unable to find the back of the net or find an equalizer late the the game.

THE COLUMBIAN KID… Sophomore Andres Cuesta hails from Bogota, Columbia and is first on the team in points with eight thanks to four goals this season. As a freshman last year, Cuesta started just six matches at forward, but ended the year tied for second on the team with two goals scored. This year, he is making the most of his shot attempts as 7 of his 14 shots have been on goal. Cuesta scored twice against Mt. Mercy at home on Sept. 13 and repeated that feat versus Viterbo on Sept. 19. At this pace, Cuesta is headed for a double-digit goal-scoring season.

THE "PINK" PANTHER… Through the team's first six matches, freshman Ryan Pinkerton is leading the club in assists with 4; he has also recorded a goal. The Apple Valley, Calif. native has taken 16 shots and placed 7 of them on frame. His aggressive offensive nature has been a welcomed sight for new head coach Jason Carlson, who says Pinkerton stretches the defense with his surprising burst of speed.

GOOD AS "NEWMAN"... Sophomore forward Jared Newman hasn't started a match this year, but he has found the back of the net, twice that is. Newman is the only player on the team to score goals in back-to-back games. The Kettering, England native scored his first goal of 2013 against Viterbo University on Sept. 19 before finding the back of the net again a week later against Mount Mercy Sept. 24.
