THIS WEEKEND IN PEACOCK BASKETBALL... Upper Iowa will take on Winona State on Saturday in a rematch of this year's NSIC Opener in Fayette. The Peacocks took the matchup by eight, 66-58, in Dorman Gym. Both teams enter the weekend on an uptick having swept their weekend bouts against Southwest Minnesota State and Sioux Falls last weekend. The game will be the final contest for UIU in 2013. The Peacocks will look to end the month of December with a winning record and return to .500 overall with a victory in Winona.

LAST WEEKEND FOR THE WARRIORS... Abby Busch averaged 15.0 points and 4.5 rebounds while helping pilot the Warriors to victories over Sioux Falls and Southwest Minnesota State last weekend. Busch continued her strong senior season, shooting 50 percent (10-of-20) on the weekend while also going 90 percent (9-of-10) from the free throw line. Busch began the weekend with 18 points and four boards in a victory over Sioux Falls. She connected on seven of eight attempts at the free throw line, helping the Warriors secure the victory late with clutch foul shots. Busch added 12 points, five rebounds and three assists the next night to lead WSU past Southwest Minnesota State. She was 5-of-9 from the floor on the day to help WSU post a big win over the Mustangs and complete the weekend sweep.

ROUND ONE TO THE PEACOCKS... UIU combined balanced scoring with pressure defense to defend Dorman Gym against the visiting Warriors. The Peacocks held their opponent under 60 points for the second time this season and saw four players reach double figures in the scoring column to post the 66-58 victory to open NSIC play. The Peacock defense took control early and held the Warriors to just two points through the first seven minutes of the game. In fact, WSU's 2-1 lead was the only time in the game that the visitors led. While neither team scorched the nets in the first twenty minutes, the Peacocks held Winona State to just 23.3% (7-30) shooting from the field and 16.7% (2-12) shooting from three. Upper Iowa used the first eight minutes of the second half to double their lead, 42-30, thanks to eight points from Whitney Kieffer and four from Lauren Buck. All five starters scored at least two points of UIU's first 18 in the second stanza. The Peacocks calmly stepped to the free throw line over the final three and a half minutes though preserving their lead and the win thanks to 12-for-14 shooting at the charity stripe. Buck was the top recipient with six points at the stripe, while Thrapp netted five of the freebies.

THIS GIRL IS ON FIRE... Junior Whitney Kieffer is averaging 17.6 points (74th NCAA/6th NSIC) per game after netting 58 points last weekend. She scored a new career-high of 35 points against Sioux Falls on Saturday and is now shooting 47.8% (10th NSIC) from the floor and 91.5% (25th NCAA/6th NSIC) from the free throw line. Kieffer also adds 5.3 rebounds, 2.3 steals (7th NSIC) and 2.1 assists per game for the Peacocks. The Scales Mound, Ill. native continues her climb up the all-time scoring list at UIU with 1,129 points (65 games). The all-time leader in points is Hall of Famer Vicky (Ringenberg) Rarick (1995-99) with 1,431.
