THIS WEEK IN MEN'S BASKETBALL... The Peacocks haven't had the start to the 2013 season that they've wanted, but the good news is that they have an early chance at redemption. In search of their first win this year, the Peacocks will face the Tritons of the University of Missouri - St. Louis (2-1) for the second time in less than a week. Tuesday's matchup will be just the third meeting all-time between the teams with UMSL holding a 2-0 lead in the series so far. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. inside Dorman Gym.
2013 HOME SLATE... Tuesday's game with UMSL will mark the only non-conference home game for Upper Iowa this season. The Peacocks - who still have three more games to play before they hit the conference schedule - will play inside Dorman just four times in 2013. UIU's back-loaded home schedule features eight games at home in 2014.
"JOSH.0"... Freshman
Josh Weeber - who was getting Division-I attention during his recruiting process - has been solid for the Peacocks to open up the 2013 season. The Dubuque, Iowa native leads UIU in scoring (15.3 ppg) and is second on the team in rebounding (4.7 rpg).
"JIMMY" JOHN'S... Much like the gourmet sub shop,
Jimmy Roth has a freaky fast delivery. The Marion, Iowa native is currently third on the team in scoring with11.3 points per game thanks to his quick trigger finger. Roth is also deadly from long range as he is currently tied for second on the team with a .400 shooting clip from behind the arc. The freshman made his first start of the season last Thursday against UMSL and finished with 10 points, four rebounds, two assists, no turnovers and one steal in just 17 minutes.
LEADING THE TRITONS... Aareon Smith (20.0 ppg, 5.3 rpg, 2.0 apg) || Tyler Wimbish (14.7 ppg, 7.7 rpg, 2 apg) || Darien Cartharn (10.7 ppg, 2.7 apg) || John Femi (8.7 ppg, 1.3 spg) || Michael Weber (8.7 ppg, 3.3 apg)
DOUBLE-DOUBLE... Although the Peacocks have not had a player record a double-double as of yet,
David Smith came very close. The redshirt-senior scored 10 points and added a team-high 7 rebounds against UMSL last Thursday night in what was his best outing for UIU this season. Smith was making his first start of the year and played 24 minutes, while adding an assist and a steal to his stat line. Furthermore, the Chicago, Illinois native is known for his defensive presence - something the Peacocks have struggled to perfect this year. Look for Smith to set the tone defensively this season.
