Upper Iowa (1-0) || Waldorf (0-1)

Recap

Upper Iowa used six wins including four by fall to rally from a 9-0 deficit in their 2013-14 home opener against Waldorf College. The win was highlighted by a pair of quick pins from Edwin Cooper (149) and Carl Broghammer (197, #2 NCAA). The pair of Peacocks have combined for seven pins in the nine matches without a loss.

The Warriors opened the dual with wins at 125, 133 and 141 behind their top-ranked wrestler Bo Bettinson (#7 NAIA), Ray McQueen and Dillon Spates. The trio of Warriors all posted seven points in their wins for a 9-0 lead.

Sophomore Edwin Cooper got the home team on the board and the crowd on their feet with his debut on the mat in Dorman Gym. Cooper ran his record to 5-0 this season with his fourth win by fall (:24). The New Lenox, Ill. native assaulted his opponent scoring a pair of takedowns around a two-point nearfall before pinning Martin Lopez's shoulders to the mat for a 24-second pin. The victory pulled UIU back within three, 9-6, on the scoreboard.

In the 157 pound bout, Trevor Duke scored first with a takedown in the first period, but Bryce Robbins answered with a pair of escapes to tie the match 2-2 heading to the third frame. Duke scored an escape and takedown in the first minute of the period to take a 5-2 lead, but Robbins answered with a reversal to pull within one. Duke held on for the 5-4 decision tying the team score at 9-9.

A pair of redshirt freshmen, Dalton Westerlund and Colbey Vance followed with wins by fall in the 165 and 174 pound matches. Westerlund's pin (3:15) came just 15 seconds into the second period when he flattened Dmonte Aursby's back to the mat, while Vance's big win (1:29) came midway through the first period after working an early takedown position and putting James Gomez upside down with his shoulders into the mat. After the two wins by fall, the Peacocks held a 21-9 lead in the match.

The Warriors halted UIU's four-match win streak with a 9-0 major decision by Brock Binversie (#10 NAIA) at 184 pounds. Waldorf's fourth win set the score at 21-12.

Carl Broghammer's entrance to the mat for the 197 pound match got the Peacock faithful back to their feet. Just 14 seconds into the match, Broghammer used a throw to and cover to record a win by fall (:14) over Dirk McOmber to improve his record to 4-0 with three falls. After UIU's fourth win by fall on the night, the Peacocks led 27-13.

In the final match, heavyweights Logan Hopp and Angel Gomez wrestled a scoreless first period and each wrestler notched an escape from the bottom position. The 1-1 tie remained until the final ten seconds when Hopp got low and shot in on Gomez for the double leg takedown and 3-1 victory. With the final match win, the Peacocks claimed six wins on the night and a 30-13 win.

Sounding Off

Head Coach Heath Grimm after the match...

On Edwin Cooper's win by fall...
"He's on a mission. He won the national title at the junior college level and he followed up a great weekend at Loras with a quick pin tonight."

On Trevor Duke's decision...
"I am extremely happy for Trevor. He's getting better with his skills, and he's beginning to take his work in the training room to the competition mat and it shows in his improvement."

On the pair of pins from redshirt freshmen Dalton Westerlund and Colbey Vance...
"Love those redshirt freshman going out there and earning bonus-point wins for us at 165 and 174."

On Carl Broghammer's 14-second pin...
"The theme of the night was our total number of pins from a year ago and Carl led the team and all of NCAA Division II with 20 a year ago. He earned a pair at Loras and added his third tonight; he has some big-time moves and really knows how to convert on them."

On Logan Hopp's late takedown for the victory...
"He spent last year adjusting to the college level and this was his first varsity dual for us. He's got great explosion and that's why we recruited him. We knew he had that ability."
