This Week in Peacock Volleyball… The UIU volleyball team will hit the road for a pair of tough NSIC road matches this Friday and Saturday. The Peacocks will line up with the #2 Bulldogs of the University of Minnesota Duluth on Friday and then play the Huskies of St. Cloud State University on Saturday. The Peacocks are coming off a 2-1 week at home, while the Bulldogs lost their first match this season (to #1 Concordia-St. Paul) and the Huskies had a difficult week going 0-3.
"Mel's" Diner... Senior Melanie Behnke returned to the court for the Peacocks in time for the start of their four-match homestand. In her 20 sets, the senior from Seymour, Wis. has tallied 69 kills including 20 against Minnesota State in her first match of the season. The 2012 All-NSIC Second Team performer is hitting .262 at the net and has added 26 digs and 9 blocks.
"Mundt" for Red October... Jennifer Mundt is having a solid sophomore campaign for UIU. As the team enters October, Mundt is looking for a repeat of her September performance that saw her rack up 186 kills, 50 digs, 28 blocks, 16 assists and 8 service aces. She recorded a season-high 26 kills against Michigan Tech in the team's opening tournament. The Utica, Minn. product is tenth in the NSIC in kills/set (3.26) and her total kills are tied for fourth in the NSIC.
Setting the Table... Junior Hailey Brown has taken over primary setting responsiblities and the change to setter has actually helped pick up her attacking stats as well. Brown has registered 411 assists (7.2/set) and 87 kills on the season. She leads the team at the service line with 22 aces in 14 matches. Brown has added 112 digs and 17 blocks on defense this year. The Elroy, Wis. native is one of three starters returning to Prochaska Court this season.
Thrown into the Fire… Four freshmen have played key roles for the Peacocks in the early going for UIU. Current starters Alisha VanderWoude, Chelsea Berry and Kelsey Hinrichs, as well as backup setter and defensive specialist Katie Chatten, have all made an instant impact for Upper Iowa. UIU graduated five key players off the 2012 squad. VanderWoude, a middle hitter, has 63 kills, 40 blocks and 12 digs, while Berry, a hitter, has 137 kills, 159 digs, 18 blocks, 13 assists and 11 aces. Hinrichs and Chatten have picked up 133 and 71 digs, respectively; Chatten has also handed out 119 assists.
Last week for the #2 Bulldogs… Coming off their first loss of the season at the hands of new #1 Concordia-St. Paul, the Bulldogs bounced back in decisive fashion with a three-set sweep of Minnesota State on Saturday night. Early last week, UMD maintained its home court advantage defeating St. Cloud State in straight sets. Coach Jim Boos surpassed his predecessor Pati Rolf as the all-time winningest volleyball coach at UMD, now sitting at 311 for his career. Senior outside hitter Kate Lange moved into the top four in all-time kills at UMD this week, now sitting at 1,680 for her career. The season's kill leader in the NSIC, Lange had 50 last week alone. She added six blocks (three solo) while hitting .287 for the week. She came up big in the battle of No. 1 vs. No. 2 with 21 kills for the Bulldogs. Junior libero Julie Rainey added 59 digs for UMD last week, an average of 5.36 per set. Sophomore setter Ashley Hinsch averaged 11.73 assists per game as she collected 129 on the week.
Last week for the Huskies… St. Cloud State team had a tough week in NSIC competition as they went 0-3 against three exceptional conference foes. First, the Huskies traveled to Duluth, Minn. to take on the Bulldogs of UMD on Tuesday, Sept. 24. The Huskies fell to the No. 1 ranked Bulldogs in three straight sets. Final scores came in at 13-25, 11-25, and 20-25. With the loss, the Huskies four game winning streak came to an end. Ellie Dietzen led the Huskies with nine kills against the Bulldogs. On Friday, the Huskies traveled to Mankato, Minn. to take on the Mavericks of Minnesota State. The Huskies fell 0-3 with set scores of 21-25, 15-25 and 22-25. Ellie Dietzen and Kaitlin Doughty led the Huskies with six kills apiece. Brianne Stamer posted a team-high 13 digs. Erin Ohlemann added 21 assists. On Saturday, SCSU took on the No. 2 ranked Golden Bears of Concordia, St. Paul at Concordia University. The Huskies fell in three straight sets to the Golden Bears with set scores of 14-25, 23-25, and 12-25. St. Cloud State fell to 8-5 overall this season, 2-3 in the NSIC. Dani Domeier led the Huskies with eight kills. Domeier also added seven digs.Ellie Dietzen and Kaitlin Doughty each posted seven kills.Brianne Stamer had a team-high 15 digs. Erin Ohlemann finished with 25 assists.
