THIS WEEK IN PEACOCK SOCCER… Upper Iowa (4-3-1, 1-0-1 MIAA) is coming off a solid opening week of play in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association. The Peacocks rallied with four goals in the second half to defeat Southwest Baptist University 4-2 and then played #10 Lindenwood University to a 0-0 tie. The homestand continues this weekend with two more MIAA matches to be played at Pattison Field in Fayette. On Friday, the Peacocks will host the Bison of Harding University at 1 p.m. On Sunday, UIU will welcome the #6 RiverHawks of Northeastern State University at 11 a.m.
LAST YEAR'S MATCHES... In UIU's match with Harding last season, the Bison defeated the Peacocks 3-0 in Searcy, Ark. thanks to a goal in the first ten minutes and then a pair of scores late in the match to put the decision out of reach. Last season's match with the RiverHawks had an identical 3-0 decision against Upper Iowa in Tahlequah, Okla. NSU scored a goal in the first ten minutes, added a second in the opening minute of the second half and tacked on a third score in the last minute of play.
EIGHT IS GREAT... Sophomore Andres Cuesta and freshman Ryan Pinkerton have led the Peacock offense this season with each recording eight points, although the two players have gotten there in different ways. Cuesta has four goals to secure his point total. The goals have come in pairs for the Bogota, Columbia product. Cuesta scored twice against Mt. Mercy at home on Sept. 13 and repeated that feat versus Viterbo on Sept. 19. Pinkerton has scored twice, but has assisted on goals four times. He is tied for the team-high in assists with Rafael Pedroso.
SIX GUN SALUTE… Sophomores Jared Newman and Rafael Pedroso, as well as freshman Aaron Calkins, have all registered six points through the Peacocks' first eight matches. Newman has reached his point total with three goals, the second highest tally on the team, while Pedroso has a goal and four assists. Calkins has split his point total between a pair of goals and a pair of assists. The trio has combined for a total 37 shots with 19 of them placed on frame.
SAVED BY THE "BELL"... Senior goaltender Jordan Bell is coming off a great game between the pipes against the #10 Lions of Lindenwood. Bell stopped 12 shots in his 110 minutes in goal; the Glasgow, Scotland import made 19 saves last week in over 195 minutes in goal, while allowing just two balls past him. For the season, he has posted a 4-3-1 record after starting all eight matches and has denied 52 shots on goal.
