This Weekend in Peacock Wrestling... The #5 Peacock wrestling program will head into their sixth straight NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals this weekend, Jan. 12-13, as the number five seed. Upper Iowa will line up against #20 Kutztown University in Springfield, Illinois at the Prairie Capital Convention Center. The tournament promises to be a who's who of NCAA Division II wrestling with 50 of the 80 nationally ranked wrestlers in competition this weekend.

"Pieces in place for Peacocks" - KJ Pilcher
A Closer Look at the Peacocks... The Peacocks are currently ranked #5 in the country and are 1-0 in duals this year after defeating Waldorf (53-0). Upper Iowa will step on the mat with #20 Kutztown this Saturday at 9 a.m. The team will be led by six nationally ranked wrestlers including a pair of #1-ranked grapplers.
Trevor Franklin (133, 1-2) and
Carl Broghammer (197, 23-2) top the list in their respective weight classes, while
Bryce Lumzy (157, 20-4) jumped into the rankings at #2.
Wade Gobin (21-7) returned to the rankings and is ranked fifth at 165 pounds, while
Mitch Schultz (8-2) remained steady at #6 in the 184-pound weight class.
Blake Sorensen (19-8) made his first appearance in the rankings at 174 pounds in the seventh slot.
What Makes the Bears Growl... KU is 2-1 in dual meets this year, with wins over American International and Division III power Ithaca and a setback to nationally ranked Pitt-Johnstown. Kutztown is ranked 20th in the latest poll by the National Wrestling Coaches Association.
Ziad Haddad is 9-1 on the year at 285 and is the lone ranked Golden Bear in the latest rankings.
Vinny Campanile, 197, leads the team in wins and is 10-4 on the year.
Bionojel Candelaria has eight wins at 165. Half of
Evan Yenolevich’s six wins are by fall with a team-high three on the year.
Setting the Scene... The National Duals are a two-day annual tournament which features 16 teams each from NCAA Division II, Division III and NAIA, as well as eight NJCAA teams and eight NCWA teams. In the NCAA Division II bracket, thirteen of the sixteen teams are ranked including four teams from the Northern Sun Conference; one additional team is receiving votes in the latest poll. The Division II field includes #1 Nebraska-Kearney, #2 Newberry, #3 Central Oklahoma, #4 St. Cloud State, #5 Upper Iowa, #6 Grand Canyon, #7 Notre Dame, #8 Findlay, #9 Minnesota State, #13 Augustana, #17 Wisconsin-Parkside, #19 Fort Hays State, #20 Kutztown and UNC-Pembroke, who is receiving votes. Minot State and Limestone are the final two teams appearing at the Duals.

Who's Up Next... Depending on the outcome of the Upper Iowa-Kutztown dual, the Peacocks will line up against either the winner or loser of the St. Cloud State (#4 seed) - UNC-Pembroke dual on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
Upper Iowa's Recent History at the Duals... The Peacocks have placed in the top eight in four of the last five years at the National Duals. Upper Iowa claimed 8th place five years ago, improved to 7th place the next year, and then claimed 5th place three years ago. After a 1-2 record in 2011, the Peacocks returned last season with their best-ever finish at the duals. Upper Iowa claimed a third-place after dropping a tight match in the semis to St. Cloud State and then defeating Nebraska-Kearney.
