The Peacock men's basketball team turned a two-point halftime advantage into a twenty-eight point blowout at Minot State University Friday night. Upper Iowa improved to 10-4 overall and 6-2 in the NSIC thanks to an 84-56 win over the Beavers. UIU hit 61.5% (16-26) of their shots in the second half including all four three-point attempts.
UIU opened the game with a quick 6-0 run and pushed their advantage to ten points for much of the first half. The final double-digit lead of the first half came with just over five minutes to play and the Peacocks holding a 28-18 lead.
Minot State rallied quickly over the next two and a half minutes to erase the margin and take a one point lead, 29-28, thanks to an 11-0 run. Upper Iowa was able to recover from the run and salvage a two-point lead, 35-33, heading into the break.
In the second half, the Peacocks dominated play from the first whistle. UIU expanded their lead to ten, 47-37, after the first five minutes and pushed the gap to 22 points midway through the half. While the UIU offense continued to convert, the defense forced the Beavers into 10 second half turnovers.
Upper Iowa grabbed their biggest lead of 31 points, 82-51, with a little over two minutes to play. As the final horn sounded, the Peacocks earned an 84-56 victory.
Five Peacocks reached double figures in the scoring column including 18 from
Joey Woods.
Sam Elgin dropped 14 points, while
Tucker Wentzien and
Grant Lang added 12 points each.
Jake Hughes was the final UIU player in double digits with 10 points.
Wentzien led the team in rebounding with 7, while Woods added 6 boards. Woods also snared 4 steals and Elgin notched 3 blocks.
For the game, UIU hit 52.9% (27-51) from the floor including 50% (6-12) from deep and also knocked in 24 of their 30 free throw attempts.
Upper Iowa will head back to Bismarck, N.D. for tomorrow evening's game against U-Mary. The game is scheduled to start at approximately 6 p.m. following the women's game.
