Upper Iowa Suffers 3-1 Loss to Mount Mercy

Something seemed wrong with UIU from the very start of Wednesday's match as they traveled to Mount Mercy for a non-conference match

The effort wasn’t there from the start of Wednesday's match for Upper Iowa after a 45-minute road trip south to Mount Mercy. Neither team could capitalize in a scoreless first half, but the Mustangs scored back-to-back-to-back goals in the second period to earn the 3-1 victory over UIU in a non-conference match.

In the 58th minute, Mustang defender Peter Bell found Robert MacGillivray with a pass that traveled nearly the full length of the field. MacGillivray then crossed the ball to Josip Druzijanic, who shot and scored.

Down 1-0, UIU didn't panic, but the Peacocks could not capitalize on the opportunities they created.

That 1-0 lead turned into a 2-0 Mustang lead in the 85th minute as Vladimir Virovkic corralled a loose ball in front of the Peacock net, turned and scored.

Demoralized by back-to-back Mustang goals, UIU looked exhausted and a step slow. Juan Maffey took advantage of the Peacocks lackluster defense and found Ramiro Alonso just outside of the goalie-box. Alonso wasted no time adding an insurance goal to push Mount Mercy’s lead to 3-0 with less than four minutes left.

Freshman midfielder Rafael Pedroso would get past the Mustang defense less than a minute later and after his first shot attempt was blocked, he collected the ball again and scored on an empty net. It was Pedroso's second goal this season, but it was too little, too late for the Peacocks.

Overall, UIU took a total of eight shots, five of which were on goal, but scored only once.

The loss drops the Peacocks to 3-6 this year, while the Mustangs improve to 6-4-1. The silver lining for the Peacocks could be the fact that this match was in non-conference play. Head coach Brian Bahl hopes this match will act as a wake-up call for his team as they hit the road this weekend for a pair of crucial MIAA contests. UIU will travel to Arkansas to face Harding University this Friday and to Oklahoma to play a very good Northeastern State squad on Sunday.
