THIS WEEKEND’S MATCHES... Upper Iowa is hosting their first volleyball tournament in the program’s history this weekend and will compete against South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, St. Cloud State University, the University of Mary and Lake Superior State University from Thursday to Saturday, Aug. 30-Sept. 1. The Peacocks will face South Dakota Mines on Thursday night at 7 p.m. and then take on fellow NSIC-member St. Cloud State on Friday at 7 p.m. On Saturday, UIU will line up against another NSIC-foe, U-Mary, at 2 p.m. and return to the court once more at 7 p.m. to face Lake Superior State.
SENIORS RETURNING TO LEAD THE CHARGE... Skylar Lesan, a 2011 All-NSIC performer, returns to lead the Peacocks into this season. She won’t be alone in that role though; four seniors join Lesan including middle hitters
Kayla Wagner and
Maryn Fulton, as well as defensive specialists
Danielle Gernes and
Emily Sparks.
Remembering 2011... Last season the Peacocks recorded a .500 winning percentage (15-15) for the first time in program history falling just one win shy of tying the all-time wins mark for the program. The team went 8-12 in NSIC play last year finishing in a tie for 9th place.
Peacock block party... Last season, the team ranked 18th nationally in blocks per set with 2.3. Senior Kayla Wagner led the team with a 1.18 blocks/set average which was good for 19th best in the country.
Lesan sets the tone... Senior setter Skylar Lesan ranked 77th nationally in assists per set in 2011. The Solon, Iowa native averaged 9.7 per set for UIU.
REPLACING A TRIO OF ATTACKERS... The Peacocks lost their top three hitters from a season ago; Sara Vance, Nicky Brown and Kristy Hinrichs all graduated. The trio combined for 954 kills, which was over 70% of the team’s total in 2011.
