The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference handed out their postseason baseball awards this afternoon and two Peacocks are among the conference's best at their positions as voted upon by NSIC coaches. Sophomore
Tyler Adams was named as one of the outfielders on the All-NSIC First Team and earned a spot on the NSIC Gold Glove Team, while
Rudy Casillas claimed the shortstop position on the All-NSIC Second Team.
Adams becomes the sixth UIU baseball player to earn first team honors; Mitch Walser (2007), Brian Putnam (2007), Ronnie Sweeney (2007), Nick Fjelland (2008) and Josh McKeon (2011) were the first five Peacocks to earn the honor. The centerfielder hit .403, tied for the fifth highest average, in 37 NSIC games thanks to an NSIC-leading 56 hits in 139 at bats, second most. Adams stole 12 bases in NSIC games, second only to his teammate Casillas. The sophomore had five doubles and a triple while driving in 25 runs and scoring 24 times. He also earned a spot on the Gold Glove Team. In 96 chances, Adams made 94 putouts and registered 2 assists without an error.
For the season, the Onalaska, Wis. native hit .410 in 200 at bats, a new Peacock single-season record. Adams had 82 hits, five short of the single-season mark for Upper Iowa, including 10 doubles and triple while striking out only 12 times. He scored 43 runs and drove in 28 runners. He swiped 14 of 18 bases for the year and only made one error in 140 chances for a .993 fielding percentage. Adams hit .482 with runners in scoring position and converted on over 82% of his chances with runners on third and less than two out picking up 14 rbi.
Adams recorded mulitiple hits in a game 27 times in his 50 starts for Upper Iowa. He registered four hits versus Northern State on Apr. 21; the southpaw swinger had three hits 10 times and two hits in 16 games. Adams long hit streak for the season was 9 games and he closed the year on a 16-game streak of reaching base safely.
Casillas was named one of the two best shortstops in the NSIC with his selection to the All-NSIC Second Team. The senior from Paramount, Calif. hit .317 in NSIC games thanks to 40 hits in 126 at bats, ninth most in the league, including three doubles. Casillas scored 20 runs and drove in 18. The shortstop's biggest contributions to UIU's offense came in two categories which he lead all of the NSIC in. His 13 sacrifice bunts were six more than teammate
Taylor Brecht, who was second in the conference with 7, and his 15 stolen bases were three more than Adams, who was second with 12.
For the year, Casillas hit .320 with 56 hits including six doubles with 31 runs scored and 23 runs batted in. He was caught stealing only twice in his 26 attempts and recorded a .917 fielding percentage in the hole at short. The senior converted more than 62% of his opportunities with a runner on third and less than two outs grabbing 10 rbi and added 10 more two-out rbi as well.
Casillas registered 16 mulitple hit games including 13 two-hit games, a pair of three-hit games; he had four hits in the second game at Quincy University. His longest hitting streak during the season was nine games and his long streak for reaching base safely reached 11 games.
The Peacock baseball team ended their season with a 20-30 overall mark and a 16-19 mark in the Northern Sun. The team finished in seventh place and one game out of the Northern Sun Championships.
