Upper Iowa dominated Waldorf College at home tonight to open their dual season in Dorman Gym. The Peacocks posted a 53-0 win over the Warriors marking the seventh shutout under Head Coach
Heath Grimm’s leadership. Thanks to seven wins by fall, a pair of major decisions and a win by decision the Peacocks won all ten matches.
Under Grimm, now in his thirteenth season as the Peacock leader, the Peacocks have posted shutouts in six different seasons. Upper Iowa defeated Knox College 54-0 and Illinois College 57-0 in Grimm's first year at the helm. The Peacocks defeated UNC Pembroke 47-0 at the National Duals in 2006, Northern State University 45-0 in an NSIC dual in 2007, a perfect 60-0 shutout of Wagner in 2009 at the Sprawl and Brawl Duals and a 41-0 NSIC dual win over MSU Moorhead in 2010.
Redshirt sophomore
Chris Paulus opened the night for the Peacocks with a win by fall just 46 seconds into his match with Bo Bettinson (#16 NAIA). Paulus scored an early takedown and three nearfall points before working his position into a pin.
Mitch Funk made his debut in the circle for an Upper Iowa dual and took control of his match in the first period with a pair of takedowns and a three-point nearfall. Ray McQueen rallied to push Funk to the edge in the final period, but UIU grappler got the win by decision, 10-9, thanks to a ride time point.
Matt Paulus, a redshirt freshman, scored a win by fall in 1:53 in his first action in front of the home crowd in Dorman Gym. An early takedown of Waldorf’s Dillon Spates led to Upper Iowa’s second pin of the night.
Jordan Rinken took the mat and continued UIU’s success on the night; although the sophomore from Denver, Iowa had to rally from an early takedown. Rinken escaped and then picked up his own takedown and then converted it into the home team’s third pin of the night with 31 seconds to go in the first period.
Bryce Lumzy returned to the mat in Dorman for the first time since the 2010-11 season and was dominating against Ryan Norton. Lumzy scored five takedowns and added a three-point nearfall to lead 13-2 as the third period wound down. He was able to mark Upper Iowa’s fourth pin on the scoreboard with just three seconds to wrestle and give the home team a 27-0 lead.
In the 165 pound match,
Wade Gobin (#8 NCAA) combined four takedowns and three separate nearfalls to claim a 15-3 lead in the second period before ending the match with UIU’s fifth win by fall (3:26).
Blake Sorensen wasted little time in the 174 pound match winning with the home team’s sixth overall and fifth straight pin. The sophomore from Denver, Iowa scored a takedown and then ended the match at the 1:08 mark.
Mitch Schultz (#3 NCAA) worked hard in his match versus Anthony Pike to earn a 9-0 major decision. Schultz picked up a takedown in the second period and added a reversal and two separate two-point nearfalls in the third round. The major decision gave the Peacocks a 43-0 lead on the scoreboard.
The crowd was on the edge of their seats for the 197-pound match as UIU’s
Carl Broghammer toed the line. Broghammer took his 11-0 record with him and quickly took control of the match. The redshirt junior took control with an aggressive pair of takedowns and supplied the home fans a seventh pin (1:24) for the Peacocks.
In the final match of the night, the Peacocks sent freshman
Jeremy Brazil into the circle and the young man from Vernon Hills, Ill. did not disappoint. Brazil scored a takedown and two nearfall points in the first period and added an escape, takedown and three more nearfall points in the second to take a 10-2 lead. In the final period, UIU’s heavyweight scored another takedown and added three nearfall points and a final ride time point to win by major decision 16-3.
Upper Iowa will now take a short break to return to the wrestling room and prepare for the UNI Open, which will take place on Dec. 8 in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
