Results for Upper Iowa Wrestler at the Luther Open
The #7 Peacock wrestling team returned to the mats today in northeast Iowa. Upper Iowa claimed 17 placewinners including four champions, three runner ups and five third place finishers. In total 26 wrestlers made their way to Decorah for the open including one-third of that total as unattached competitors. The tournament was broken into two sets of brackets; the Elite brackets housed the upperclassmen, while the Freshman brackets were reserved for their namesake.
Upper Iowa was led by 197-pounder
Carl Broghammer, who remained undefeated this year posting four more wins and claiming a second straight open title.
Bryce Lumzy (157) and
Jordan Rinken (149) joined Broghammer at the top of their respective weight classes in the Elite Brackets, while
Colbey Vance claimed the Freshman Bracket title at 165 pounds.
Broghammer went 3-0 with two wins by fall and a major decision, while Lumzy went 4-0 with a win by decision, a major decision and two wins by fall. Rinken also went 4-0 with a win by technical fall and three decisions. Vance's day began with a flurry as he recorded two wins by fall and then a four-point decision in the final to go 3-0 after a first round bye.
Lincoln Monroe (Fresh. 125),
Jeremy Brazil (Fresh 285) and
Mitch Schultz (Elite 184) all placed as the runner up in their respective weight classes, while five Peacocks claimed third place finishes. The group of five included
Jordan Roths (Fresh 141),
Blake Sorensen (Elite 174),
Wade Gobin (Elite 165),
Duane Richardson (Elite 141) and
Chris Paulus (Elite 125).
Others to place at the open were

Logan Hopp (Fresh 285 - 5th),
Tanner Schmidt (Elite 125 - 5th),
Noah Minikus (Elite 184 - 6th) and
Matt Paulus (Elite 141 - 6th).
The Peacocks will continue their run of open tournaments next Saturday, Nov. 17, when they travel to Minneapolis, Minn. Upper Iowa will compete in the Brute/Adidas Open hosted by Augsburg. The tournament will once again be split up into two sets of brackets... the Gold Brackets for upperclassmen and the Silver Brackets for freshmen.
