An upset was in the making for the Upper Iowa men’s soccer team as they hosted the top team in the MIAA on Sunday. The Peacocks had their opportunities early and often in their final home match of 2012, but could not capitalize as UIU fell 1-0 to the visiting Lindenwood Lions at Pattison field.

UIU allowed the eventual game-winning goal in the 79th minute of action on Sunday as Alejandro Da Silva scored his first goal in 2012 on a corner kick. That goal was all Lindenwood needed to claim the victory and improve to a conference-best 7-0-2 this season in MIAA play.

Defense aided the Lions, but the UIU offense had its chances. The Peacocks snatched the momentum just before halftime earning a couple good looking shots and corner kicks. None of which could find the back of the net.

Having only produced two shots in the opening 23 minutes of play, the Peacock offense went to work as the half wound down. As a team, UIU had 10 shots in the final 22 minutes, four of which were on goal, but still, the Lion defense held strong.

All year long, Lindenwood has won with defense, giving up only 11 goals all year. Again, it looked as if UIU would fall victim to that.

After Da Silva’s goal in the 79th minute, UIU had a couple final opportunities to tie it, but the Peacocks could not capitalize. With the loss UIU falls to 5-12 overall and 2-6 in the MIAA.

The Peacocks will finish the 2012 season on the road as they take on Truman State in Kirksville, Missouri on Friday. Seniors Jon Kluever, Travis Willows and Alan Martinez will be honored before the women’s final home match of the season on October 28th at Pattison Field. Those ceremonies will commence before a 1 p.m. game time.
