Peacocks drop the opening set, but bounced back with three straight set wins to claim a Northern Sun victory at home over MSU Moorhead. Defense and a spirited crowd proved to be the formula for success for Upper Iowa’s 3-1 win. The victory keeps the Peacocks rolling at home, where they are undefeated in seven matches this year; UIU has now won six out of their last seven NSIC matches. Upper Iowa improves their overall record to 12-7 and their NSIC mark to 6-4. The Dragons, who received votes in the latest AVCA Top 25 poll, fall to 12-7 and 4-6 in the conference.
During the first set both teams came out hard on offense. The Peacocks only recorded one attacking error to their 14 kills, but it wasn’t enough to stop the Dragons. MSU Moorhead scored 22 of their 25 points thanks to kills; the visitors used a balanced attack that saw three players record five or more kills.
In the second set the crowd came to life and gave the Peacocks the lift they needed. The match was virtually even, but UIU edged their guests 27-25 to even the match at one set apiece. UIU took advantage of three service aces and four set points.
Upper Iowa showed tremendous defense in the third set. Though the points were even, UIU dominated at the net with a three to one ratio in team blocks propelling the home team to another 27-25 set win.
UIU pulled away convincingly during the fourth set again thanks to their defense posting a 25-17 victory which gave them the match win. Upper Iowa claimed a four to one advantage in team blocks in the deciding set.
Setting up the attack for the Peacocks was senior
Skylar Lesan, who dished out 51 assists. UIU killed the ball from every angle at the net with four Peacocks in double figures. Junior
Melanie Behnke led the way with 17 kills, followed closely by
Jennifer Mundt who recorded 15.
Hailey Brown and
Kayla Wagner added 11 and 10 kills, respectively. On the defensive side,
Amanda Weiss dug up 20 balls while Brown had 13 of her own. Seniors
Emily Sparks and
Danielle Gernes each added 11 digs as well. Wagner led the home team at the net with seven blocks, while Brown added four and
Maryn Fulton sent back three.
The Peacocks close out their weekend of NSIC play when the Wolves of Northern State University come to Fayette for a 5:00 p.m. match. The Wolves come to town after upsetting Winona State; the Warriors entered the weekend tied for first in the Northern Sun. The 3-0 sweep by NSU marks their fourth straight win.
