The Peacocks erased an early 18-point defecit, but the Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State University crept away from the home team in the second half snapping Upper Iowa's three game winning streak. SMSU posted an 81-71 win in Dorman on Friday night to improve to 10-8 overall and 9-5 in the NSIC. Joey Woods scored 24 off the bench for the home team as UIU dropped to 7-11 on the year and 4-10 in the conference.
The Mustangs raced out to a 21-3 start over the first five minutes which included an 11-0 opening run for the visitors. Upper Iowa found their stride and recovered by halftime to pull within three, 36-33. The Peacocks doubled their guest's offensive output, 30-15, over the final fifteen minutes of the half thanks to 10 of 19 shooting from the field over that span.
SMSU slowly edged out to an 11-point lead at the 13:16 mark in the second half taking a 54-43 lead on a jumper in the paint by William Giddings. The Peacocks steadied themselves, but never got closer than 8 points for the remainder of the contest. The largest defecit in the second half was 15 points, 70-55, with 3:19 to play. UIU rallied one last time to cut the gap to eight, 79-71, with under 30 seconds to play.
For the game, the Mustangs shot 56.5% from the floor, while the Peacocks shot 48%.
