Upper Iowa 34 - Waldorf 12

Complete Results

The #11 Peacocks welcomed the Warriors of Waldorf College to Dorman tonight for the Peacocks’ lone non-conference dual of the season. Upper Iowa won seven of the ten matches including three by fall, one by technical fall and two by major decision. UIU, fueled by the thirteen bonus points, posted a 34-12 victory to improve to 5-3 on the year.

The Warriors put the first team points on the board at 125 pounds when Venel Rene was awarded a victory by forfeit as the Peacocks left the weight open for tonight’s dual.

Kyle Pedretti (#1 NCAA) quickly got the home team back in it with a domination of Ben Seglin. The junior posted 6 takedowns and three separate nearfalls to quickly earn a 20-5 technical fall victory prior to the end of the second period (4:45).

Blake Hilmer, who dropped to 141 pounds over the last few weeks, and Colby Kriegel posted immediate pins to give Upper Iowa a 17-6 lead. Both Hilmer and Kriegel used one shot and takedown to gain the advantage and work into their pins. Hilmer’s came in 16 seconds, while Kriegel’s came in 39.

Waldorf rallied with a win by decision at 157 pounds. Winston Robbins scored first with a takedown, but left the first period trailing 6-2. The UIU grappler lost by an 11-8 decision to Jeremy Padilla.

Bryce Lumzy earned a major decision victory at 165 pounds over Rashad Moss. Lumzy scored a takedown and three nearfall points as the first period ended to pull out to a 5-0 lead. The junior from Dixon, Illinois scored two more takedowns, another three-point nearfall and a ride time point (2:30) to earn a 13-0 win and give the Peacocks a 21-9 lead.

Wade Gobin toed the line at 174 versus Gabe Vasquez. Gobin owned the first period with a pair of takedowns for a 4-2 lead. Vasquez fought back by riding out the entire second period. Fortunately for the Peacock sophomore from Cannon Fall, Minnesota, he was able to hold off Vasquez’s shots in the final period and escape with a 4-3 decision.

Mark Mueller made his debut in Dorman Gym at 184 pounds versus Josh Ellingwood. Mueller scored on six takedowns in the first two periods and added three nearfall points to take a 15-5 lead into the final period. Two third-period takedowns and a ride time advantage of 2:37 led to a 20-7 major decision victory and a 28-9 Upper Iowa lead.

Carl Broghammer (#8 NCAA) and Jeff Roman locked up at 197 pounds in the feature match of the evening. Roman entered as one of the Warrior leaders with a 12-5 record. The pair of wrestlers each scored an escape, but nothing else as the match moved to sudden victory. Roman posted the winning takedown and earned the 3-1 victory.

In the final match of the night, Zach Rosol (#4 NCAA) made quick work of his opponent Andrew Hartshorn. Rosol scored an early takedown and two nearfall points, before converting his position into UIU’s third fall of the night. For the junior from Nashua, Iowa, the pin was his team-high twelfth of the season.

The Peacocks will now face their toughest back-to-back duals of the year on Friday and Sunday. Upper Iowa will travel to #2 Augustana as they hope to spoil the Vikings opportunity at their first NSIC title. The dual with Augie is set to begin at 7 p.m. in Sioux Falls, S.D. UIU will then return home for their final dual in Fayette this season. The #3 Huskies of St. Cloud State will take to the mat in Dorman for a showdown with Upper Iowa. The Sunday dual is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
