The #11 Peacock grapplers suffered their second Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference dual loss of the season Friday night as they dropped a 29-8 decision to #2 Augustana in Sioux Falls, SD. With the victory, the Vikings secured the 2010-11 NSIC title thanks to a perfect 7-0 record in conference duals.
Mark Mueller collected a technical fall at 184 pounds and Zach Rosol, the #4 ranked heavyweight in the nation, won by decision, 6-4. for Upper Iowa. Three other matches were decided by three points or less.
Mueller (184) took an early 7-1 lead after one period against Matt Morris fueled by a pair of takedowns and a three-point nearfall. The Postville, Iowa native added two more takedowns and three separate two-point nearfalls to win by technical fall, 18-2 (5:55).
Rosol (#4 NCAA) scored the only points in the first period of his match with Lance Peters on a takedown and the only point of the second period on an escape to lead 3-0 heading into the final period. Peters came on strong in the final period scoring two takedowns, but a pair of escapes and a ride time advantage (1:24) gave the Peacocks a win at heavyweight, 6-4.
Augie's Ty Copsey (#2 NCAA) got the better of Carl Broghammer (#8 NCAA) at 197 in a match up of nationally ranked wrestlers, 7-4.
UIU's Kyle Pedretti (#1 NCAA) was defeated for the first time in a dual this season. Jason Jeremiason won by decision 5-1 after posting a pair of takedowns and adding a ride time point.
Blake Hilmer wrestled well in only his second match at 141 this season. Hilmer lost by decision, 4-2, to Jay Sherer (#4 NCAA).
Winston Robbins also competed hard against a ranked opponent. Marcus Edgington (#3 NCAA) won by decision 4-2, but needed an escape and ride time point (1:17) to get the close win at 157.
The Peacocks also lost matches to nationally ranked wrestlers at 149, 165, and 174 and left the 125 match open.
Upper Iowa (5-4, 3-2 NSIC) returns to the mat in Dorman Gym on Sunday for their final home dual of the season. The Peacocks will host the #3 Huskies of St. Cloud State at 2 p.m.
