This Week in Men’s Basketball...
The Peacocks open a four-game road trip this weekend when they visit South Dakota and Nebraska for Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference showdowns. On Friday, the Peacocks visit Sioux Falls, SD for an 8 p.m. matchup with the Vikings of Augustana. Then on Saturday, UIU travels to Wayne, Neb. to take on the Wildcats of Wayne State at 6 p.m.
Scouting the Vikings
The Vikings of Augustana enter Friday’s contest with a 10-5 record overall which includes a 7-4 mark in NSIC play and enter the weekend riding a four-game winning streak after defeating Wayne State last Saturday, 79-76 in double overtime. The Vikings currently sit in a tie for fourth in the conference standings.
The Vikings rank second in the NSIC in scoring defense by allowing just 65.1 points per outing and are led offensively by Cody Schilling (18.4 points per game) and Cameron McCaffrey (17.5 points per game).
Scouting the Wildcats
The Wayne State Wildcats enter Friday’s game with Winona State in a two-way tie for eighth place with a 9-6 record overall which includes a 5-6 mark in league play after dropping their last two NSIC contests.
The Wildcats are led offensively by sophomore Amry Shelby’s 18 points per game, ranking him fifth individually in the conference. The Wildcats rank as the best team in the league when it comes to steals as they average nearly nine per game (8.93).
Series History
Since transitioning to NCAA Division II before the 2005-06 season, the Peacocks are a combined 2-13 when facing this weekend’s opponents. UIU is 1-6 when playing Augustana and 1-7 when lining up against Wayne State.
The Last Meeting
Upper Iowa and Augustana last met on February 12, 2010 in Sioux Falls, SD with the Vikings pulling out a 84-73 victory. However, UIU split the season series with Augustana after defeating the then #18-ranked Vikings, 70-67 in Fayette on January 15.
UIU and WSC met the next evening with Wayne State winning the contest, 63-54.

Looking Ahead
Upper Iowa closes out the four-game road stretch next weekend when they make one of their shorter trips of the NSIC slate.
UIU visits Southwest Minnesota State next Friday, January 28, before visiting Mankato, Minn. the next afternoon and entertaining the Mavericks of Minnesota State. Friday’s tipoff is set for 8 p.m. while Saturday’s game will start at 6 p.m.
