Complete Results

Upper Iowa returned to the mat in Dorman Gym for their second Northern Sun Conference match up of the season. The #11 Peacocks welcomed the Wolves of Northern State for the Sunday matinee. NSU claimed a 9-8 lead midway through the first five matches, but UIU rallied with four wins in the final five bouts to earn a 25-15 victory.  The Peacock wins included a win by fall, a tech fall, two major decisions and two decisions.

The Wolves jumped out to a 3-0 lead after Matt Meuleners (#4 NCAA) controlled his match with Peacock heavyweight Zach Rosol to take a 6-0 decision for the vistors. Meuleners registered a takedown in the first and two nearfall points in the second en route to a victory.

Trevor Franklin (125, #3 NCAA) gave the lead back to the home team with an impressive 15-3 major decision victory over Corbin Surat.  Franklin tallied four takedowns and added nearfall points on two occasions. The final point came with Franklin’s ride time of 2:55.

Kyle Pedretti (#1 NCAA) toed the line in the 133 pound match and gave the Peacocks a second straight major decision. Pedretti took a 7-2 lead in the second period and never looked back. The junior recorded three takedowns and added three nearfall points while accumulating over three minutes in ride time.

Leading 8-3, senior J.R. Baker (141) looked to keep the momentum in UIU’s favor. Baker scored first in the second period with a reversal, but Benton Crow countered with a reversal and added a reversal in the third period to take a 4-2 lead. A ride time point (1:07) gave Crow the 5-2 decision and pulled the Wolves back within two, 8-6.

Freshman Trevor Duke scored first in the 149 pound match with a takedown, but was unable to hold Beau Voegeli for long. Duke escaped to open the second period and was forced to escape again after he was taken down. The Peacock from Burlington, Iowa opened the third period with a 4-3 lead, but Voegeli scored a reversal and two nearfall points to go up 7-4. After a third escape by Duke, Voegeli scored the final points of the match with a takedown to win 9-5 and give NSU a 9-8 lead midway through the dual.

Winston Robbins (157) put UIU back on top 11-9 with an 8-6 decision over Blake Lundgren. Robbins scored four takedowns in the match and led 8-4 before a takedown by Lundgren in the final seconds.

Bryce Lumzy (165) dominated his match with Neil Sell winning by technical fall (15-0, 4:40). The Peacock junior scored an early takedown, and after three separate nearfalls, Lumzy went to the second period with a 10-0 lead. Lumzy added a second takedown and three more nearfall points to close out the tech fall win and put Upper Iowa ahead 16-9.

Wade Gobin made quick work of Chad Gibson in the 174 pound match. Gobin scored a pair of takedowns around three nearfall points. After nearly ending the match on the first takedown, the sophomore from Cannon Falls, Minnesota converted the second takedown into his ninth win by fall of the season. The fall came with just one second remaining in the first period.

The match at 184 pounds lasted less than a minute after the Peacocks’ Mitch Schultz could not continue after being injured on a takedown by Cale Cornemann.  The six points cut the margin to just seven, 22-15, but only one match remained.

Carl Broghammer (197, #6 NCAA) ended the dual with a win by decision over Brett Fosheim.  Broghammer carried a 3-2 lead into the final period and the redshirt freshman poured it on in the final period to win 9-3.  He picked up three takedowns in the match and added a ride time point (1:23).

Upper Iowa will be on the road for their next two Northern Sun duals. The Peacocks will visit Minnesota State on Thursday, Jan. 27, and Southwest Minnesota State on Friday, Jan. 28. Both duals are schedule for 7 p.m. starts.
