The Upper Iowa Soccer teams travelled to Milwaukee, Wis. on Wednesday night for a midweek doubleheader with the Wolves of Cardinal Stritch University. The Peacock Women’s team started the doubleheader off on the right foot as a late Peacock goal netted the ladies a 1-0 non-conference victory. In the nightcap, the Peacock Men needed all 90 minutes of the match to earn a 2-1 victory.
In the women’s game, Upper Iowa blasted nine shots at the CSU net in the first half, but couldn’t break through as the match went to halftime tied at 0-0. The visitors kept the Wolves to just a pair of shots while committing seven more fouls than their opponents.
Caitlin Wagener broke the 0-0 deadlock late in the 75th minute of action when she was assisted by Brooke Skaggs and Emma Vanderheyden to notch her first goal of the 2010 season and gave UIU the 1-0 lead and victory.
The Peacocks were the much more aggressive team throughout the match as they tallied up 27 shots, 18 of which came in the second half, to go along with nine corner kicks and 12 fouls. UIU was also busted for offsides six times while CSU was caught four.
Peacock goalkeeper Amanda Smith turned away four shots on her way to collecting her fourth win of the 2010 season.
The men’s contest started on a sour note for the Peacock Men’s Soccer team. Cardinal Stritch broke through late in the 12th minute of action to put UIU in an early 1-0 hole. Peacock junior Derek Oelmann tied the match at 1-1 just before halftime by capitalizing on a penalty kick to send the teams to the break tied.
Stritch outshot the visitors 8-6 in the first half while Upper Iowa earned four corner kicks to the Wolves’ one.
Upper Iowa and Cardinal Stritch played very evenly throughout the majority of the second half before Oelmann struck again in the 88th minute of action to complete the Peacock come-from-behind victory and to seal a 2-1 victory for the visitors. The goal was assisted by Bo Miller.
Both squads took six shots in the second half while Stritch earned the only two corner kicks. Peacock goalkeeper Jordan Bell turned away seven shots while conceding a goal for the first time since Upper Iowa played Metro State in the third match of the season, a stretch of 478 minutes.
The Lady Peacocks will get back to Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action this weekend when they visit Duluth, Minn. and Bemidji, Minn. this Saturday and Sunday to take on Minnesota Duluth and Bemidji State. Both matches are scheduled for 1 p.m. starts.
The Men’s team will be back on the pitch this Friday when they visit Superior, Wisconsin to line up against the Yellow Jackets of UW-Superior. The opening kick of that match is scheduled for 4 p.m.
