Box Score

The Peacock Men's Soccer team hit the homestretch of the 2010 season Wednesday afternoon when they visited the East Lake Park Soccer Complex in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa to take on the Tigers of Iowa Wesleyan College. Upper Iowa's Alan Martinez and Derek Oelmann netted goals in the first ten minutes of the match as UIU dominated the Tigers, 5-0.

Martinez's third goal of the season came in just the fourth minute of action as UIU raced out to an early 1-0 lead. The goal was assisted by Bo Miller, his fourth of the 2010 campaign.

Then just five minutes later, Oelmann headed in a cross off of the foot of Frank Atchison to extend the Peacock advantage to 2-0 just 10 minutes into the match. Atchison posted a goal of his own in the 37th minute of the match to make the tally 3-0 in favor of the visitors as the halftime horn sounded. Atchison's second goal of the season was assisted by Marco Garcia.

Upper Iowa outshot Iowa Wesleyan 11-4 and put six of the 11 on goal in the first half. IWC earned seven corner kicks in the first 45 minutes while UIU tallied just three.

The fast start to the first half was mirrored in the second half for Upper Iowa as Tony Varnava scored an unassisted goal just three minutes into the half to run the UIU lead to 4-0. Finally in the 56th minute of work, Oelmann notched his second goal of the match and 17th of the season when Martinez assisted the junior forward as the Peacocks collected the 5-0 victory.

The Peacocks blasted 23 shots throughout the match and put 12 of those shots on goal. Oelmann and Martinez each fired six shots while Garcia posted five tries. Goalkeeper Jordan Bell turned away four Tiger chances as he kept his fifth clean sheet of the season.

Oelmann's pair of goals break the three-way tie for the NCAA Division II lead in goals scored. The Waverly, Iowa-native now has 17 goals in just 16 matches and stands alone as the national leader in goals scored.

Upper Iowa will close out the 2010 season next Wednesday, October 27 when they visit Dubuque, Iowa to take on the Crusaders of Clarke. Kickoff is slated for 3 p.m.
