LIBERTY, Mo. - The Peacocks (1-4-2, 1-4-0 GLVC) notched their first victory of the season with a 2-1 win over William Jewell (Mo.) (1-6, 0-4 GLVC) on Saturday, earning Head Coach Jeancy Matumona-Bau his first win. Midfielder Pedro Campanha Buccini and forward Benjamin Wendel each scored their first goals of the season.
UIU sealed the 2-1 victory in the 66th minute. Buccini found the back of the net with his right foot, sending the ball toward the bottom-left corner of the goal.
The Cardinals struck first in the 23rd minute to take a 1-0 lead. Forward Daniel Pirillo scored with his right foot, placing the ball into the lower-left corner of the net.
Upper Iowa answered in the 42nd minute to level the match at 1-1. Midfielder Timur Nagy, from approximately 15 yards out on the far right side of the field, sent a cross toward Wendel, who headed the ball into the lower-right corner of the net.
Wendel scored a goal and had three shots on goal. Buccini netted a goal and boasted two shots on goal. Nagy totaled two shots on goal and an assist, while forward Jeremiah Goko totaled three shots with a shot on goal.
Defender Nate Stauder recorded two shots, with one shot on goal. Defender Kyler White had two shots on goal. Defenders Arnas Kurakinas and Quirin Elias Haimmerer each posted a shot on goal, while forward Sebastian Camargo and midfielder Santino Tapia Jr. each posted a shot.
Goalkeeper Noah Nymark-Pedersen had seven saves. Nymark-Pedersen and defender Rayan Lafon both played 90 minutes.
Pirillo totaled five shots, with four shots on goal, and a goal scored. Midfielder Kanosh Abdulameer recorded an assist and a shot. Midfielder Jeremiah Goko mustered three shots with one shot on goal.
Upper Iowa had 19 shots, 13 shots on goal and five corner kicks. William Jewell collected 14 shots, eight shots on goal and six corner kicks. UIU totaled 10 fouls and two yellow cards, while WJC totaled eight fouls.
The Peacocks return home on Wednesday, Sept. 23 to face Maryville (Mo.) (5-2-1, 3-0-1 GLVC) at 2:30 p.m. Upper Iowa then hosts Rockhurst (Mo.) (3-3-2, 2-1-2 GLVC) on Saturday, Sept. 26 at 12:30 p.m.
