FAYETTE, Iowa - Freshman Maryn Hudson scored her second goal of the season in UIU's (0-0-2) 1-1 draw against Southwest Minnesota State (0-1-1). UIU and SMSU battled through some rainy conditions in the second half after the game was initially delayed by an hour and 16 minutes due to lightning.
The Peacocks scored the first goal in the 24th minute on their first shot of the game. After getting the ball on the inside, Hudson passed it to Haylie Hutchinson, who immediately crossed it back in for a Hudson header to the left of the net for the score.
That would be the extent of the UIU pressure, as SMSU outshot the Peacocks 27-5 total in the game with an 18-3 margin in the second half. The Mustangs finally got one to go through in the 71st minute, with Illjana Arbaugh knocking one through off a corner kick by Jada Backes.
Avery Harding finished the game with 12 saves in the net. Taylor Marie Inocelda-Bihag and Abigayle Bates played all 90 minutes. The Peacocks played 19 total players compared to SMSU's 13 players featured.
SMSU had a slight advantage on corner kicks, 4-3, while UIU had more fouls, 7-5. Hutchinson led the Peacocks in shots with three, while Aeryn Hatico and Hudson each added a shot. Sophia Wilson led SMSU in shots with eight, while Backes and Evie Boyle each added six.
Upper Iowa will prepare for conference play this week with its first road game on Friday, Sept. 4, against Missouri S&T. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. in Rolla, Missouri.
