Zimmer bats 1.000 and Bombardier totals eight RBIs as Peacocks fly by Cardinals on Friday

Peacocks pick up first home wins of the season after totaling 25 hits

FAYETTE, Iowa - Peacock baseball (14-19, 7-9 GLVC) got back in the win column with a Friday sweep over William Jewell (Mo.) (6-28, 2-16 GLVC), 15-5 and 7-5, both in seven innings. Brock Zimmer went a perfect 6-for-6 at the plate, while Gabe Bombardier added a team-high eight RBIs on five hits and a home run. 

Zimmer reached on all nine of his at-bats, adding two walks and a hit-by-pitch to his six hits. He had one double and two RBIs while scoring four times. Gabe Bombardier went 5-for-9 while scoring three runs.

JJ Vargas tallied three hits with a team-high two doubles and four RBIs. Jared Hoodjer added four hits with an RBI and two runs scored. Thane Meiners had three hits, walked twice and scored a team-high six runs. 

Cael Luzum and Jayce Klug each added two hits. Luzum scored four times with a double and an RBI. Klug had two RBIs on his two hits. Hunter Jones walked three times, had an RBI and scored a run. 

On the mound, Gabe Olson and Dylan Hesch picked up wins after their starts. Olson pitched 4.2 innings in game one, allowing five runs on 12 hits, two of which were earned runs. He tossed four strikeouts. 

Hesch pitched 5.0 innings in game two, allowing five earned runs on six hits and three walks. He tossed three strikeouts. Brett Nicodemus didn't allow a hit in relief with a strikeout to earn a save. Ethan Bombardier threw four strikeouts in relief in game one, while Hudson Ivey threw two strikeouts. 

The Peacocks are back in action on Saturday to wrap up the series. After a slight time change, UIU and WJC will face off in a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m. at Robertson Woods Field.

Game One: Upper Iowa 15, William Jewell 5
After a two-out Peacock error extending the opening inning, Koen Gakstatter hit a double and Brayden Blundell hit a 2RBI single to give the Cardinals a 2-0 early lead. A Meiners walk, a Zimmer single and a Hoodjer single loaded the bases in the bottom of the opening inning. Vargas walked with two outs for an RBI, making the Peacocks trail 2-1 after the first. 

The Cardinals added to their lead in the third off a Blake Tigges RBI double, and then scored himself on a Peacock fielding error for the 4-1 advantage. That would be William Jewell's last lead of the game. 

Zimmer doubled, and Gabe Bombardier hit an RBI single to lead off the bottom of the third. Jones walked to bring in another run and Klug hit a 2RBI single through the right side for the 5-4 advantage. Luzum hit a sacrifice fly to left field to bring in Jones for the sixth run of the game. 

After Olson retired the side in the fourth inning, Meiners, Zimmer and Gabe Bombardier all singled to score another run. Vargas then hit an RBI double for the 8-4 advantage. 

Bronson Ryan doubled, and Ilyas Van Den Bos RBI singled to left field to cut the lead to 8-5. After a Hayden Post single, Ethan Bombardier entered and got out of the inning by striking out leadoff hitter Luke Bies after a 3-0 count.

Luzum singled, Meiners walked and Zimmer walked to load the bases in the fifth. Following Luzum scoring on a wild pitch, Gabe Bombardier hit a three-run homer for the 12-5 advantage. 

In the seventh, Zimmer and Gabe Bombardier hit RBI singles. Zimmer then scored the final run on a walk-off wild pitch to win the game via mercy rule in the seventh inning. 

Zimmer finished the game 4-for-4 with one double, one RBI, a walk and three runs. Gabe Bombardier also had four hits and a team-high six RBIs with a home run. Hoodjer had two hits, while Luzum, Meiners, Vargas and Klug each had a hit. Vargas and Klug each totaled two RBIs while Meiners scored four times. 

Olson picked up the win after allowing two earned runs on 12 hits and four strikeouts. Ethan Bombardier and Ivey did not allow a hit in relief, throwing four and two strikeouts, respectively.

The Peacocks outhit the Cardinals 14-12 while both teams committed two errors. UIU walked six times while WJC walked four times. The Cardinal batters struck out 10 times while the Peacock batters struck out five times. Upper Iowa left six runners stranded while William Jewell left 10. 

Game Two: Upper Iowa 7, William Jewell 5
Upper Iowa struck first in game two, getting runners on first and second in the second inning with a Hoodjer single and a Vargas double to right center. Hrncir hit an RBI groundout to bring in the game's first score. 

The Peacocks added two more runs in the third inning. Luzum hit a leadoff double, and Meiners singled to get him to third base. After Zimmer reached on a hit-by-pitch, Hoodjer singled through the left side for an RBI. Vargas added another run on a sacrifice fly to right field to score Meiners. 

The Cardinals scored all five of their runs in the fourth to answer, loading the bases on a single, a walk and a hit-by-pitch. Luke Isaacs singled through the left side for the first run. Justin George hit a bases-clearing double to right center for three runs and the 4-3 advantage. Gakstatter hit an RBI single, but was out extending to second to end the inning with a 5-3 lead. 

UIU responded with four runs in the fourth inning. Jones walked while Klug and Meiners singled to load the bases with one out. A Zimmer RBI single to a tough spot in right field scored a run to trail, 5-4.

Gabe Bombardier hit the go-ahead, 2RBI single to center field to take a 6-5 lead. Vargas added an RBI single to left for an insurance run. 

Hesch and Nicodemus did not allow a hit the rest of the game, only having two batters reach on a hit-by-pitch and a walk to seal the win, 7-5.

Zimmer, Meiners, Hoodjer and Vargas all had two hits. Gabe Bombardier and Vargas both had two RBIs. Luzum and Klug each had a hit with a double. 

Hesch pitched five innings, allowing five earned runs on three walks and six hits. He totaled three strikeouts and pushed his record to 3-2. Nicodemus earned the save, not allowing a hit with one walk and one strikeout in two innings pitched. 

UIU outhit William Jewell 11-6, and neither team committed an error. The Peacocks walked three times and struck out five times, and the Cardinals walked four times and struck out four times. Both teams left eight runners on base.
