FAYETTE, Iowa - Peacock baseball (16-26, 9-16 GLVC) fell too far behind in both games as they got swept in Saturday's doubleheader against Quincy (30-18, 18-13 GLVC). The Hawks scored 14 runs in the first inning of game one, winning that game, 28-7. They scored eight runs in the final two innings of game two to run away with that one, 12-6.Â
Cael Luzum went 1-for-2 with three walks, three hit-by-pitches and scored five runs. Gabe Bombardier went 3-for-6 with three RBIs. Brock Zimmer went 3-for-8 with two doubles and three RBIs.
The Peacocks used 12 pitchers between both games. Dylan Hesch started game one but did not make it out of the first inning. Kyle Hrncir pitched game two and went 5.1 innings with a team-high six strikeouts.Â
The series finale will be played at 12 p.m. on Senior Day Sunday as the Peacocks honor 21 seniors after the game.Â
GAME ONE: QUINCY 28, UPPER IOWA 7
It was a rough start in game one of the doubleheader for the Peacocks as they used three pitchers in the first inning while giving up 14 runs on six hits and committing one error. Six walks with five straight RBI walks and two hit by pitches helped put the Hawks up, 14-0.
The Peacocks got one of those runs back with an RBI single from Hoodjer after Luzum walked to get a runner on base early in the inning.
The Hawks kept the scoring going into the second inning with an Isaiah Fudge 2RBI single. The Peacock offense scored four runs in the bottom of the second with RBI singles from Luzum and Zimmer. Thane Meiners had an RBI groundout while Hoodjer hit a sacrifice fly. This brings the score to 16-5.
Quincy scored three more in the third inning with a Jace Figuereo RBI double, a Harry Fandre groundout RBI, and an Isaiah Fudge RBI single. The Hawks scored three runs again in the fourth on an RBI single from Ari Fivelson, and RBI walks from Joe Huffman and Fudge.
In the fourth, JJ Vargas hit a single to left, and an error from the left fielder allowed Hoodjer to score the sixth run of the game. Quincy tacked on two more runs from a sacrifice fly and wild pitch in the fifth.Â
In the bottom of the fifth, Bombardier singled to right, driving in a run for the Peacocks after Luzum reached on an error.Â
The Hawks scored on an error in the sixth. In the last inning, Fivelson led off with a solo home run, then Fudge hit a two-run home run to extend the Hawks' lead, 28-7.
Hesch suffered the loss in game one, getting one out and giving up four hits, eight runs, seven earned runs, one walk and one strikeout.Â
Hoodjer went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Luzum, Meiners, Zimmer and Bombardier each picked up one RBI.Â
Ben Dahlof went a perfect 3-for-3 with two walks and five runs scored. Fudge went 4-for-5 with eight RBIs, including a two-run home run.
The Hawks outhit the Peacocks, 17-10. The Hawks committed three errors while the Peacocks committed two. The Hawks drew 16 walks while the Peacocks drew five walks. Peacock pitching struck out seven batters, while Hawk pitching struck out eight batters.Â
GAME TWO: QUINCY 12, UPPER IOWA 6
Hrncir was game two's starter, and gave up a leadoff walk to Dalhof. Dalhof would steal second, advance to third on a groundball, then score on a passed ball. The Hawks took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Zimmer hit an RBI double to bring home Luzum first run of the game.Â
The 1-1 tie did not last long as Fudge hit an RBI double to right-center field on the second at-bat of the second inning, scoring Huffman from first base. Fudge would go on to score on a pop-up to first base.
In the fourth inning, the Hawks added onto their lead with an RBI single from Ari Fivelson. Later in the sixth inning, the Hawks scored four runs on two hits and an RBI walk. Bombardier got one of those runs back with an RBI single.Â
Payton Mansfield hit a two-out grand slam in the seventh inning that served as the knockout blow. The Peacocks did rally in the bottom of the inning. Meiners had an RBI single, Zimmer followed with a 2RBI double, then Bombardier hit a sacrifice fly. It was too much of a deficit to climb, and the Peacocks lost, 12-6.
Hrncir pitched 5.1 innings, giving up five hits, six runs, four earned runs, four walks and six strikeouts. Tyler Glowacki and Cameron Powell pitched the final 1.2 innings.Â
Zimmer went 2-for-4, hitting two doubles with three RBIs. Meiners went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Luzum drew two walks and scored three runs.Â
Kade Ruffner picked up the win, pitching six innings, only giving up three hits and two earned runs. Seven Quincy batters picked up an RBI in game two.Â
