Upper Iowa baseball’s late rally falls short on senior day

Bombardier hit a grand slam and Luzum smacked a double and a homer

FAYETTE, Iowa - Peacock baseball (16-27, 9-17 GLVC) could not complete the comeback as they dropped the series finale and lost the series against Quincy (31-18, 19-13 GLVC). The Peacocks trailed by 10 runs before scoring six unanswered runs. However, it was too little too late as their comeback attempt fell short, 11-7.

Senior righty Isaiah Maes took the mound for the last time at home in his Peacock career and pitched a scoreless first two innings. Upper Iowa jumped out to an early lead after a two-out rally led to a Thane Meiners RBI walk.

Payton Mansfield hit a three-run home run to give the Hawks a 3-1 lead. The Hawks' big inning came in the fifth, where they scored eight runs on five hits. The most impactful hit was a 3RBI double by Ari Fivelson.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Peacocks loaded the bases when Brock Zimmer was hit by a pitch, bringing in a run. The next pitch Gabe Bombardier sent over the left field wall for a grand slam. This put the Peacocks right back in the game, 11-6.

Cael Luzum hit a two-out solo home run in the seventh to give the Peacocks six unanswered runs. Dalton Dibert pitched three scoreless innings to keep the Peacocks in the game. But the offense got shut out in the final two innings, losing the game, 11-7.

Bombardier went 2-for-4 with a hit by pitch and a grand slam. Luzum went 2-for-4 with a walk, a hit by pitch, two runs scored and a home run. Meiners and Zimmer each had an RBI.

Maes pitched four innings, giving up eight hits, three earned runs and two strikeouts. Dibert pitched three scoreless innings, only allowing one hit and striking out one batter.

Mansfield hit his third home run of the series for Quincy with a three-run home run. He also walked twice, scored two runs and picked up the save on the mound. Harry Fandre and Joe Huffman each picked up three hits, with Fandre having two RBIs.

Ben Draeger started the game but left in the first inning with an injury. The Hawks went to the bullpen early, using four relief pitchers in the series finale. Ethan McMasters picked up the win after taking over for the injured Draeger.

The Peacocks travel south to Kirkville, Missouri, to take on Truman State (Mo.) (12-32, 5-23 GLVC) for their final regular season series starting on Thursday at 3 p.m.
