Upper Iowa baseball hosts final home series vs Quincy this weekend

Series starts at 2 p.m. on Friday at Robertson Woods Field; Senior Day Ceremony set for after Sunday’s game

FAYETTE, Iowa - Upper Iowa baseball (15-24, 8-14 GLVC) welcomes Quincy (Ill.) (28-17, 16-12 GLVC) for their final home series of the season. The four-game series is set to begin on Friday at 2 p.m., followed by a doubleheader at 1 p.m., then conclude with the series finale on Sunday at noon.

SENIOR DAY
The Peacocks will honor 21 seniors after Sunday's series finale. Gabe Bombardier, Dalton Dibert, Devin Garbiso, Nick Hartje, Braden Herr, Jared Hoodjer, Kyle Hrncir, Matt Hughes, Cael Luzum, Isaiah Maes, Thane Meiners, Gabe Olson, Brady Pickett, Cameron Powell, Paul Safranski, Austin Shingledecker, Will Smith, Jacob Topp, JJ Vargas, Ero Wallin and Brock Zimmer will all be honored. 

LAST TIME OUT
The Peacocks return after a rough weekend in Springfield, Missouri, after getting swept in a four-game series against Drury (Mo.) (26-16, 17-7 GLVC). The Peacocks blew a late lead in game one and lost 13-7. They got swept in the doubleheader on Saturday, losing the first game, 6-0, and the second game, 5-1. Both teams went back and forth during the series finale, but ultimately the Peacocks fell too far behind and lost, 14-7. 

JJ Vargas went 4-for-10 in the series with a double and a home run. Vargas drove in eight runs, scored three runs and walked four times. He batted .400 with an OPS of 1.371 in the four games against Drury. 

Gabe Bombardier and Cael Luzum each had five hits and two walks this weekend. Bombardier added two home runs, two RBIs and two runs scored to his season total. Luzum hit a triple, drove in four runs and scored one. 

On the mound, Kyle Hrncir pitched a six-inning complete game and had six strikeouts. Ethan Bombardier made his second start of the season in the series finale, going four innings and allowing three hits while striking out two batters.

RECORD WATCH
Vargas is one home run shy of tying the program record of 30 set last season by Gunnar Wicklund. He has 10 home runs this season, tying for the most in a single season in his career. 

STATISTICAL SUMMARY
Thane Meiners leads the Peacocks with 44 hits and a .321 batting average. He also has 21 walks, scored 28 runs, stolen six bases and has an on-base percentage of .410.

Jared Hoodjer is second on the team in batting average, hitting .315. He has 34 hits with seven home runs, 27 RBIs and 26 runs scored. Hoodjer leads the team with a .574 slugging percentage and is second on the team with a .971 OPS.

Bombardier is second on the team in hits with 43, including 11 doubles, eight home runs and a team-best 46 RBIs. Brock Zimmer is batting .309 with 42 hits, seven home runs, 30 RBIs, team-leading 40 runs scored and a .949 OPS.

Vargas has reached double-digit home runs, hitting his team-best 10th home run of the season this past weekend. He also leads the team with a .995 OPS. Luzum is batting .299 with 40 hits, 11 stolen bases and leads the team with 12 doubles. Jayce Klug is the team leader with 29 walks, giving him a .434 on-base percentage and has stolen a team-high 12 bases.

Gabe Olson's 4.11 ERA has him at fourth best in the conference. In 10 starts this season, Olson has a 6-2 record, pitching in 50.1 innings, striking out 44 batters and walking 24 batters. Opponents are batting .312 against him.

Hrncir has made seven starts with a record of 3-2 and has one complete game. He has thrown 37.1 innings with a 4.58 ERA. Hrncir has a team-best 45 strikeouts, and opponents are batting .243 against him. In GLVC play only, he has a 4.55 ERA ranking ninth in the conference. 

Dylan Hesch has pitched 40 innings with a 5.18 ERA. This is enough to put him at 12th best in the GLVC. Hesch has made eight starts and has a 3-3 record while striking out 35 batters. Batters are hitting .296 against him.

As a team, the Peacocks are batting .261 and have a 7.89 ERA. Upper Iowa has hit 39 home runs, which ranks sixth in the GLVC. Peacock pitching has combined for 286 strikeouts, which ranks seventh in the GLVC. 

AROUND THE GLVC
No. 24 Missouri S&T (27-13, 20-4 GLVC) still sits atop the GLVC as they prepare to take on Maryville (Ill.) (23-18, 17-7 GLVC), who is tied for second place in the GLVC. Maryville is part of a four-way tie with Illinois Springfield (29-13, 17-7 GLVC), Drury and Missouri-St. Louis (23-18, 17-7 GLVC).

Only two games behind the second-place tie is Rockhurst (Mo.) (27-13, 15-9 GLVC) and Indianapolis (24-18, 15-9 GLVC). These teams are tied for sixth place and play teams this weekend that are tied for second place. Rockhurst is on a four-game win streak as they take on Drury, and Indianapolis plays Illinois Springfield. 

Five teams are separated by only a couple of games for the final spot in the GLVC tournament with two weekends left to play. Quincy currently holds the eighth spot in the standings. Lewis (Ill.) (19-22, 11-11 GLVC), McKendree (Ill.) (19-23, 11-13 GLVC), Southwest Baptist (Mo.) (17-23, 9-15 GLVC) and Upper Iowa are close behind Quincy for the final spot in the GLVC Tournament. 

McKendree's Sage McMinn earned GLVC Player of the Week after batting 10-for-14 with five home runs, four doubles, 11 RBIs and 12 runs scored. He slashed .714/.789/2.071 against Lincoln (Mo.) (6-33, 0-24 GLVC). Missouri-St. Louis' Dustin Hagens earned GLVC Pitcher of the Week. He appeared in two games against Indianapolis, tossing 6.2 shutout innings and only giving up two hits. Hagens earned a win in both appearances, including an extra-inning appearance. 

ABOUT THE HAWKS
Quincy sits at eighth seed in the GLVC after coming off a series win against William Jewell (Mo.) (9-32, 4-20 GLVC) this weekend. 

Junior outfielder Jace Figuereo leads the Hawks batting .412/.497/.534. He also leads the GLVC with 28 stolen bases. Figuereo's .412 batting average is seventh best in the conference, while his .497 on-base percentage is fifth best in the GLVC. His 53 runs scored this season puts him at fifth best in the GLVC. 

Redshirt sophomore infielder Isaiah Fudge is the conference leader with 68 hits. This gives him a .405 batting average, which is 10th in the conference. Fudge has four home runs and 46 RBIs. He has drawn a team-best 30 walks and has 17 stolen bases.

Senior outfielder Ben Dahlof is 19th in the GLVC with a .386 batting average, ninth in hits with 61 and fourth in stolen bases with 24. He has 46 runs scored and 27 RBIs. 

Illinois native Payton Mansfield leads the team with eight home runs, a .694 slugging percentage and 1.183 OPS. His slugging percentage and OPS rank eighth in the conference.

Senior lefty Roman Harrison has been the Hawks' ace this season, making 11 starts, throwing 58.2 innings with a 5.52 ERA. He holds a 6-2 record while striking out 55 batters. Opponents are batting .285 against him. 

Redshirt junior righty Kade Ruffner has also made 11 starts with a 5.69 ERA. He has pitched 55.1 innings with a team-best 68 strikeouts, which is also tied for second-best in the GLVC. Opponents are batting .288 against him. 

As a team, Quincy is third best in the conference with a .335 batting average. They are second best in hits with 480 as a team. They lead the conference with 125 stolen bases. Their pitching ranks sixth with a 6.38 ERA. They are third in the GLVC with 338 strikeouts.

Head coach Matt Schissel has spent 10 seasons coaching the Hawks, but has been the head coach for the past five seasons. His record as head coach is 166-89, including a school record 47 wins in a season, a GLVC championship and two NCAA playoff appearances.
