Peacocks unable to keep up with Drury and drop series finale

Luzum leads UIU with three hits and drove in three runs

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Peacock baseball (15-24, 8-14 GLVC) got the bats going, but the pitching struggled as they dropped the series finale on Sunday, 14-7, and got swept by Drury (Mo.) (26-16, 17-7 GLVC).

Cael Luzum reached base four times with a walk, a triple and two singles. He also drove in three runs and scored one. Thane Meiners had two hits and two RBIs. JJ Vargas and Gabe Bombardier were each on base four times with a single, a double and two walks. Jared Hoodjer reached base three times with a hit, walk and was hit by a pitch.

Ethan Bombardier started the game pitching four innings allowed three hits and four earned runs. He walked and struck out two batters each.

Luzum led off the game with a walk and Meiners followed with a single putting the first two batters on. A strikeout and a double play ensued as the Peacocks missed their first scoring opportunity of the day.

Bombardier made his second start of the season as the Peacocks as the Panthers got to him right away after a lead off walk followed by a two run home run from Jackson Crider.

Upper Iowa responded immediately after loading the bases with a hit by pitch and two walks. Then with two outs, Luzum singled up the middle to tie the game, 2-2.

The Peacock offense stayed hot heading into the third inning. Brock Zimmer led off with a double, then Bombardier hit an infield single to put runners on the corners with nobody out.

Zimmer would score on a wild pitch to regain the lead for the Peacocks, 3-2. Later in the inning, bases would be loaded for Hunter Jones who got an RBI the easy way with a walk to double the Peacocks at 4-2. But the lead was short-lived as Greydon Miller launched a two run home run in the bottom of the fourth to tie up the score, 4-4.

After a quiet fourth inning, Upper Iowa got things going again in the fifth inning, leading off with back to back walks followed by a single from Jayce Klug to load the bases with nobody out and the top of the order coming.

Luzum picked up his third RBI of the game on a fielder's choice. Meiners followed with an RBI sacrifice fly that scored Jones to help the Peacocks find themselves up two runs once again, 6-4.

The Panthers once again responded immediately. This time, Connor Bain connected for a three-run home run to give the Panthers their first lead since the first inning, 7-6. Their big inning came in the sixth, starting with a Bain RBI single. Then, Carter Wambach hit a 2RBI single to right field. Followed by a 2RBI double off the bat of Xander Schmitt. All five runs scored with two outs as Drury led 12-6.

The Peacocks got one of the runs back after Luzum led off the seventh with a double and Meiners drove him in with another sacrifice fly. But the Panthers were not done scoring as Bain singled up the middle to bring in two more runs and extend the lead, 14-7.

That score stuck for the last two innings as the Drury Panthers took the series finale and swept the four-game series against Upper Iowa. The Peacocks outhit the Panthers, 12-10. They also outwalked the Panthers, 11-9. Upper Iowa's offense struck out six times and left 15 runners on base, while Drury's only struck out four times and left seven runners on base.

Luzum led the Peacocks, going 3-for-5 with three RBIs. Meiners, Vargas and Bombardier had two hits each. Meiners had two RBIs on sacrifice flies. Jones walked twice with one RBI and one run scored.

Bombardier started the game, going four innings, allowing four runs. He left the game with the lead before Tyler Glowacki took over. The righty pitcher suffered his first loss of the season after going 1.2 innings, giving up six runs on four hits while walking four and striking out two batters.

Bain carried the Panthers, going 3-for-4 with six RBIs and two runs scored. He crushed a three-run home run, giving the Panthers the lead, and they ran away with it. Crider, Miller, Schmitt and Wambach all had two RBI's each.

Drury used six pitchers to win the series finale. Markell Dixon started things for them, but only went two innings, giving up two hits and two runs while walking three batters. Porter Slattery picked up the win, going two scoreless innings, only allowing one hit and walking three batters.
