FAYETTE, Iowa - Peacock baseball scored nine runs in the fifth inning to win the first game of the final home series at Robertson Woods Field over Quincy (Ill.) (28-18, 16-13 GLVC). Jared Hoodjer (16-24, 9-14 GLVC) led the team with four hits and a home run in the 13-6 win.Â
The Peacocks trailed after the opening half of the first inning, 2-0, after four two-out singles by the Hawks. UIU responded in the bottom of the inning with a two-run home run by Gabe Bombardier with two outs on the board.Â
Quincy's David Broughton hit a solo homer in the second to reclaim the lead, 3-2. The game remained that way until the bottom of the fourth, as Hoodjer hit a leadoff solo homer to tie it. After Kyle Hrncir singled on a bunt and stole second, Paul Safranksi brought him home with a go-ahead RBI single to lead, 4-3. The Peacocks never trailed again.Â
Bombardier and Hoodjer started the barrage of scoring in the fifth with back-to-back RBI singles to left field. A JJ Vargas single to right and a Hrncir sacrifice fly added two more runs. Safranski brought in the ninth run on a fielder's choice, scoring Hoodjer.Â
After Cael Luzum was hit by a pitch for the second time in the game, Thane Meiners smacked a two-out grand slam to lead 13-3. This marked the first grand slam of the senior's career.Â
The Peacocks held firm from there, but couldn't quite get the mercy-rule win as Payton Mansfield hit a two-out, two-run home run in the seventh to extend the game. The Hawks added another run in the ninth on an RBI double, but Brett Nicodemus was able to get out of a bases-loaded situation by forcing a flyout to Hoodjer in left field.Â
Gabe Olson grabbed the win on the mound after pitching seven innings with four strikeouts. He did not allow a single walk, marking his second appearance of the season without doing so. The Hawks totaled 12 hits and five earned runs off of him.Â
Nicodemus pitched two innings of relief, giving up three hits, two walks and one earned run. He struck out one batter.Â
Hoodjer finished the game 4-for-5 with a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored. Safranski was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and scored a run. Bombardier totaled two hits with a home run, three RBIs and scored twice.Â
Meiners finished the game with four RBIs on one hit, but scored three times. Hrncir tallied two infield hits, an RBI and scored a run. Vargas had a hit, RBI and scored a run.Â
Peyton Mansfield led Quincy, going 3-for-5 with a home run, a double and three RBIs. Ryan Sell took the loss in the start, pitching four innings, giving up five hits, four earned runs and a walk. Brady Lowe was the most effective pitcher, throwing three innings while allowing three hits, no earned runs and striking out two batters.Â
The Hawks outhit the Peacocks, 15-12, and committed the only error of the game. Quincy left nine runners on base while the Peacocks left six runners on base. UIU batters walked three times with four hit-by-pitches, and QU walked twice.
The Peacocks and Hawks will be back in action for the Saturday doubleheader at Robertson Woods Field at 1 p.m. The series concludes with Senior Day on Sunday at 12 p.m.
