Upper Iowa softball swept by Missouri S&T in Saturday twinbill

Farnam leads UIU with multi-hit effort as UIU drops 14-0 and 17-4 decisions, looks ahead to Sunday doubleheader at Lincoln

FAYETTE, Iowa - Peacock softball (5-35, 0-16 GLVC) lost two games on Saturday to Missouri S&T. Cara Farnam totaled two hits, a double, an RBI, a run scored, 3.1 innings pitched and two strikeouts.

UIU stays in Missouri to face Lincoln (Mo.) (18-19, 4-14 GLVC) on Sunday at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. LU split a doubleheader with Lewis (Ill.) (21-17, 10-6) on Saturday

Game One: Missouri S&T 14, Upper Iowa 0
The Miners fired off several runs in the first inning to take a 4-0 lead. The first run came off a Molly Fitzgerald right field single, the second run came off a Kaylee LaChappell shortstop single, the third run came off a Tori Thompson center field single and the fourth run came off a Trista Grobe right field line single. 

Missouri S&T added five runs through the second and third innings. The one run in the second inning was scored after LaChappell reached base on a fielder's choice. The other four runs in the third were scored off a Morgan Williams double to right-center, a Claire Lopez fielder's choice and AJ Agers single through the left side. 

The final blow came in the fourth inning when they tacked on an additional five runs to take a 14-0 victory. Keira Jones drove home the first run, while a Taylor Nelson Grand Slam drove home the last four runs. 

Dorothy Ziebell had Upper Iowa's lone single. Farnam threw 3.1 innings, allowing 14 earned runs on 16 hits and zero walks. The Lincoln, Illinois native also recorded two strikeouts. 

Taylor Nelson netted a Miners-high four RBIs, three hits, a walk and four runs scored. Agers pitched four innings, not giving up any runs on one hit. She also posted five strikeouts. 

UIU totaled one hit, an error and did not leave any runners on base. S&T had 16 hits, 14 RBIs, two walks and left six runners on base. 

Game Two: Missouri S&T 17, Upper Iowa 4
Missouri S&T carried its momentum into the second game, ripping off six runs in the first inning to take a 6-0 advantage. The first three runs were scored after Fitzgerald connected for a 3RBI homerun to center field. The fourth run was scored after Williams singled to right-center field. 

The last two runs were scored off an Upper Iowa throwing error. 

The Miners scored six more runs in the second and third innings, taking 12-0 lead. A Nelson center field home run and a Thompson 3RBI home run to left field brought home four runs in the second inning. Another Nelson home run to left field, along with an Agers home run, led to the two runs scored in the third inning. 

The Peacocks responded, scoring four runs in the top of the fourth inning. Kaylee Marhefke and singled to right field, while Mya Mendoza singled to left field to start the inning. Farnam then doubled to center field, allowing both runners to score. 

Addyson Alber followed her with a center field double, driving home Farnam. Mara Sivley then singled down the left line, scoring Alber. 

S&T added five runs in the bottom of the fourth to beat UIU, 17-4. The runs came off a Lopez single, a Nelson single and a Fitzgerald double. 

Farnam finished with two hits with a double, an RBI and a run scored. Alber had a hit with a double, an RBI and a run scored. Sivley posted a hit and an RBI, while Marhefke and Mendoza posted a hit and a run. 

On the mound, Sivley threw three innings, giving up nine earned runs on eight hits and three walks. The freshman also recorded two strikeouts. 

Nelson of the Miners netted three hits, three RBIs, a walk and four runs scored. Mia Miller pitched two innings, not allowing a run on one hit. 

Upper Iowa totaled six hits, three RBIs, two errors and left two runners on base. Missouri S&T had 14 hits, 15 RBIs, four walks, an error and left four runners on base.
