FAYETTE, Iowa - Upper Iowa softball (5-33, 0-14 GLVC) dropped a pair of contests against Southwest Baptist (Mo.) (17-25, 6-10 GLVC) on Saturday. The team lost 11-2 in both contests.
Kaitlin Foral totaled two hits, an RBI and a run scored. Sara Reid finished two hits with a double at the plate, while adding four strikeouts on the mound. Addyson Alber recorded two RBIs and a hit.
The Peacocks hit the road for doubleheaders against Missouri S&T (21-15, 8-6 GLVC) on April 18 and Lincoln (Mo.) (17-16, 3-11 GLVC) on April 19. Each day will have games at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.Â
Game One: Southwest Baptist 11, Upper Iowa 2
The Bearcats scored a run in the first inning of a Peacock throwing error. SBU then increased its advantage to 5-0 after adding four runs in the top of the second. The first run came off a left-side single by Emily Titus, and the other three runs came off a left-center 3RBI home run by Keele Elsea.Â
UIU responded quickly, ripping off two runs of its own at the bottom of the second. Foral singled to left center field, and Cara Farnam got hit by a pitch to reach base. Both were later brought home by an Addyson Alber single to left-center field.Â
Southwest Baptist ended up winning, 11-2, scoring a total of six runs through the third and fourth innings. The run in the third came off an Ashley Gruben sacrifice fly. The final five runs of the game came in fourth off an Elsea single, a Graccee Brockman double and a Gruben double.Â
Dani Laughlin had two hits, while Ella Perkins had a walk. Foral recorded a hit and scored a run, while Alber recorded a hit and two RBIs. Farnam threw for seven innings, giving up five earned runs on four hits and two walks. She also posted two strikeouts.Â
The Peacocks ended the game with four hits, two RBIs, a walk, three errors and left five runners on base. The Panthers finished the contest with 11 hits, nine RBIs, four walks, an error and left seven runners on base.Â
Game Two: Southwest Baptist 11, Upper Iowa 2
Laughlin got hit by a pitch to start the order for UIU in the first inning, and Hamaker came in to pinch run for her. A fielding error by SBU off a left field single by Foral allowed Hamaker to cross home plate, giving Upper Iowa the early 1-0 advantage.Â
Southwest Baptist answered shortly, tallying four runs in the second to control a 4-1 lead. Brockman homered to left center field for the first run, while Ava Minton drove home the second run on a fielder's choice bunt to third base. The final two runs of the stretch came off a throwing error by the Peacocks.Â
The Panthers added five runs in the third inning, increasing UIU's deficit to 9-1. Minton singled for the first run, Titus doubled for the next three runs and Elsea singled for the final run. SBU tacked on another two runs in the top of the fifth off a Minton single and an Elsea single.
Upper Iowa made the final score, 11-2, after recording a run in the bottom of the fifth. Sara Reid singled towards shortstop, before coming out for pinch runner Reagon Proud. Proud was later brought home by a Hamaker groundout to shortstopÂ
Hamaker had an RBI and scored a run. Perkins and Foral posted a hit, while Proud scored a run. Reid connected for a hit with a double at the plate and struck out four batters on the mound. During the senior's time on the mound, she allowed two earned runs on five hits.Â
