KANSAS CITY - UIU softball (5-29, 0-10 GLVC) dropped a doubleheader to Rockhurst (Mo.) (17-14, 507 GLVC) on Sunday. The Peacocks fell to the Hawks, 5-2 in the first contest and 10-4 in the second contest.Â
Reagon Proud had a slugging percentage of .857. The sophomore totaled two hits with a double, a home run, an RBI and scored a run. Mya Mendoza had two hits with two doubles, a walk and scored a run. Cara Farnam recorded two hits with a double and two RBIs.Â
UIU takes a week off before hosting doubleheaders against Southwest Baptist (Mo.) (14-22, 3-9 GLVC) on April 11 and Drury (Mo.) (15-18, 5-7 GLVC) on April 12. The games will be held at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. both days.Â
Game One: Rockhurst 5, Upper Iowa 2
The Hawks took a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Kaylee Pugh reached base off a Peacock error, before Avery Huffman hit a single to first. Pugh was brought home by an Eva Fulk single up the middle for the first run. Huffman was brought home by former UIU player Taylor Sedam's sacrifice fly for the second run.
RU added another run in the third inning. The run came off a left-side RBI single by Huffman.
UIU made the score 3-1 after scoring a run of its own in the fourth inning. Jescie Comstock connected for a lead-off single to center field. The Fort Scott, Kansas, native later crossed home plate off a Hawks throwing error.Â
The Hawks widened their advantage to 5-1 in the fourth inning, after scoring two runs. Fulk drove in both runs with a double towards left center field.Â
The Peacocks softened the final blow to 5-2 after scoring a run in the sixth inning. Dani Laughlin connected for a single down the left field line before later scoring off a Sara Reid right field RBI single.Â
Comstock connected for two hits while scoring a run. Laughlin had a hit and scored a run. Reid had a hit and an RBI. Farnam threw six innings, allowing three earned runs on 10 hits and six walks.Â
Upper Iowa totaled five hits, two RBIs, three walks, an error and left seven runners on base. Rockhurst recorded 10 hits, five RBIs, six walks, two errors and left 11 runners on base.Â
Game Two: Rockhurst 10, Upper Iowa 4Â
Proud powered a left field home run in the top of the first inning, giving UIU an early 1-0 lead. Emily Berry of RU hit a left field home run of her own in the bottom of the inning to tie the game.Â
Upper Iowa took a 4-1 advantage after scoring two runs in the top of the second. Reid singled to right-center field. Cara Farnam then connected for a double to right field, driving home Pomeroy and Mendoza. Ella Perkins later hit a single to shortstop, allowing Reid to score.Â
Rockhurst answered by scoring four runs in the bottom of the inning to jump out to a 5-4 lead. The first two runs came when Sedam connected for left center field double, while the other two runs came off a Berry 2RBI center field homer.Â
The Hawks held onto a 10-4 victory after adding five runs in the fifth inning. The runs came off singles by Izzy Carter, Fulk, Sedam and McKenna Lester.Â
Proud posted two hits with a double and a home run, with an RBI and scored a run. Mendoza mustered two hits with two doubles, a walk and scored a run. Farnam finished with a hit with a double and two RBIs. Perkins recorded two hits, an RBI and a walk.Â
Reid pitched six innings, giving up 10 earned runs on 15 hits and a walk. The senior also had two strikeouts.Â
UIU finished with eight hits, four RBIs, four walks, an error and left eight runners on base. RU recorded 15 hits, 10 RBIs, a walk and left nine runners on base.Â
