FAYETTE, Iowa - UIU softball (5-25, 0-4 GLVC) lost two games to Truman State (Mo.) (11-21, 3-5 GLVC) on Sunday. UIU lost 11-3 in the first game and 6-0 in the second game.Â
Danni Laughlin led Upper Iowa at the plate, going 5-for-7 (.714 batting average), including an RBI. The sophomore finished a productive weekend against both Truman State and Quincy (Ill.) (6-22, 2-4 GLVC), going 11-for-14 with a double, four RBIs and a sacrifice fly. She also scored three runs and recorded 12 putouts at center field.
Kaitlin Foral finished with two hits, an RBI and a walk against Truman St. Addyson Alber totaled a hit, a walk and scored a run. Reagan Proud posted a hit, an RBI and scored a run. Dorothy Ziebell recorded a hit with a double and a walk.Â
The Peacocks hit the road to take on William Jewell (Mo.) (12-18, 3-5 GLVC) on Saturday, March 28, and Rockhurst (Mo.) (15-12, 3-5 GLVC) on Sunday, March 29. UIU plays each team at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. in a doubleheader.
Game One: Truman State 11, Upper Iowa 3
Emily Wood hit a right-field home run to lead off the game, giving TSU a 1-0 lead. Then Riley Redig hit a sacrifice fly later in the first inning for the team's second run. Truman State increased its advantage in the second inning after the Peacocks committed an error and Cassie Smith hit an RBI single up the left side of the field to lead, 4-0.Â
Upper Iowa responded by scoring two runs in the third. Alber hit a single through the left side of the field, while Proud reached first off a TSU error to start the order. A Foral single down the left field line brought home Alber, and a Laughlin single up the middle brought home Proud.
The Bulldogs halted the Peacocks' momentum as they added three runs in the top of the fourth to take a 7-2 lead. The runs came off a Peacocks error, along with singles by Katie Pilche and Redig.Â
UIU responded by ripping off a run at the bottom of the inning. Ella Perkins connected for a hit to right-center field and was later brought home when Proud hit a single to right field.
TSU secured the 11-3 victory after scoring three runs in the fifth inning and a run in the seventh. The runs in the fifth inning came off an Avaree Taylor sacrifice fly, a Smith single and a Maddie Hickman walk.
Laughlin had four hits and an RBI, while Foral had two hits and an RBI. Cara Farnam threw seven innings, allowing eight earned runs on 15 hits and four walks. The Lincoln, Illinois native also recorded four strikeouts. Upper Iowa as a team had nine hits, three walks, three RBIs, three errors and left nine batters on base.Â
Truman State had 15 hits with an error and left 11 runners on base. Madison Kluever earned the win after pitching 3.2 innings and a strikeout. Brooke Nutter pitched 3.1 innings without allowing a run and tossing three strikeouts.
Game Two: Truman State 6, Upper Iowa 0Â
Truman State scored the game's first run in the second inning off a Shanna Buford groundout, bringing home Pilche. TSU took a 3-0 lead after ripping off two runs in the fifth. The first run came when Smith doubled to center field, and the second came off a UIU error.
Upper Iowa created momentum in the third inning. Elliott Pomeroy walked to start the order. After two straight strikeouts, Sara Reid connected for a single, moving Pomeroy to second. This momentum would end as Foral lined out to end the order.Â
The Bulldogs added two insurance runs in the fifth inning to increase the advantage to 7-0. The first run was added after Smith hit a double to center field, while the second run was added when the Peacocks committed a fielding error.Â
With two outs on the board in the seventh, Jescie Comstock connected for a single through the left side of the field. However, TSU held on to win after Pomeroy grounded out to third on the following at-bat.Â
Ziebell recorded a hit with a double, while Reid, Laughlin and Comstock recorded hits with a single. Reid pitched seven innings, not allowing an earned run, with seven hits and two walks. Upper Iowa had four hits, five errors, a walk and left five runners on base.Â
