FAYETTE, Iowa - Maryville (Mo.) (14-10, 8-0 GLVC) took the fourth and final game of Upper Iowa's (11-14, 4-4 GLVC) home opening series on Sunday, 14-4, in eight innings. The Saints outhit the Peacocks 15-4 in the victory.
Maryville scored the first two runs of the game in the second inning off a Steven Schneider two-run homer. A Jace Burton 2RBI single later in the inning extended the Saints' early lead to 4-0.
The Saints added five runs in the top of the fourth, scoring the first run of the inning on a Burton sacrifice bunt. Dominic Anelmo and Schneider both hit 2RBI singles for the 9-0 advantage.
In the sixth inning, Anselmo hit a two-run homer for the 11-0 lead, before UIU cut into the lead in the bottom of the inning. Brock Zimmer reached on a leadoff, four-pitch walk. Jared Hoodjer singled to advance him, and JJ Vargas walked.
After that, Zimmer scored on a wild pitch, and Kyle Hrncir singled to left center for a 2RBI single. This was Hrncir's first start at second base this season, and he went 1-for-3 in his season debut at the plate.
UIU added a run in the bottom of the second. Luzum singled, stole second and reached third on a throwing error on a pickoff attempt. Zimmer flied out to right field for the sacrifice fly, bringing Luzum in.
The Saints responded in the bottom of the eighth, starting with singles by Jack Meyer and Cooper Walkoff. Schneider hit his second home run of the game near the left field line for a three-run homer and the 14-4 lead. The Saints got three outs in the bottom of the inning for the 10-run rule victory.
Hoodjer led the Peacocks with two hits and scored a run. Luzum and Hrncir had UIU's other two hits, with Hrncir leading the team in RBIs with two. Vargas reached twice on a walk, while Luzum, Zimmer and Thane Meiners all reached on a walk. Zimmer had an RBI and scored a run.
Schneider went 3-of-5 for the Saints with seven RBIs. Meyer also had three hits. Anslemo had two hits with four RBIs, and Burton had one hit, one walk and three RBIs.
Maryville's Nolan Miller earned his second win of the season on the mound after starting and pitching a scoreless five innings. He only allowed one hit, two walks and threw four strikeouts.
Isaiah Maes took the loss for the Peacocks after starting and pitching the opening 3.2 innings. He allowed seven earned runs on six hits, three walks and two hit-by-pitches. He added two strikeouts. Garrett Konz threw two strikeouts in his two-inning relief appearance.
The Peacocks travel to UIndy next weekend for a four-game series starting at 3 p.m. on Friday, March 27. There will be a doubleheader on Saturday, March 28, between the teams at noon, and the series closes on Sunday, March 29, at noon.
