Upper Iowa softball snags first victory of 2026

Peacocks edge Crimson Storm 3-2 in game one before falling 6-2 in game two at the Rogers State Festival

CLAREMORE, Okla. - UIU softball (1-7) recorded its first win of the season after splitting Sunday's doubleheader against Southern Nazarene (Okla.) (3-5). The Peacocks beat the Crimson Storm in the first game, 3-2, before losing the second game, 6-2. 

Sara Reid won her first game of the season on the mound after pitching 1.2 innings in game one. She totaled seven innings pitched on the day with five strikeouts, while allowing three hits and a run. Dorothy Ziebell had two RBIs and two hits. Macy Alderson posted a hit, a run and a double on the day.

UIU squares off next with Southwest Minnesota State (2-2) in a doubleheader in Sioux Center. The games take place at 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. on Feb. 15. 

Upper Iowa 3, Southern Nazarene 2
The Crimson Storm scored the first two runs of the game. They scored their first run in the first inning off an Abby Wood home run and their second run in the fourth inning off a Kira Taber double. 

The Peacocks answered in the fifth inning with runs of their own. Kaitlin Foral drew a walk and then stole second base. Reagon Proud followed with a single to center field to advance Foral. Ziebell later singled up the middle, driving in Foral and Proud to knot the game at 2-2.

Sara Reid opened the sixth inning with a walk and later stole second base. Alderson reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Reid to advance to third. Dani Laughlin then singled up the middle to bring home the go-ahead run. In the top of the seventh inning, Reid struck out Southern Nazarene's final two batters as Upper Iowa held on for the 3-2 win.

Dorothy had a team-high two RBIs and one hit. Foral and Proud each recorded a run and a hit. Laughlin had a hit, an RBI and a walk. Addyson Alber was walked once, and Elliot Pomeroy connected for a hit. Emma Tautges had the Peacocks only double and was walked once.

Reid recorded a hit and a walk. The Central City native won her first game of the year after pitching on the mound for 1.2 innings, allowing zero hits, zero runs and striking out three batters. Mara Sivley pitched six innings, allowing two runs and four hits. She had three strikeouts. 

Wood had a hit, an RBI and a run for the Crimson Storm. Taber had a hit and a run. Baylee Sales was at the mound for 4.2 innings, allowing four hits and two runs. She also walked six batters and recorded a strikeout.

UIU walked seven times, left 11 runners on base and had three errors. SNU left four runners on base and had an error. 

Southern Nazarene 6, Upper Iowa 2
The Crimson Storm poured on five runs during the first inning. They bunted in the first run, the second run came off a single and the last three runs came off Ciena Perez's home run. Southern Nazarene added a run off an error in the third inning, extending the lead to 6-0. 

Upper Iowa responded by scoring its first run of the game in the fourth. Laughlin walked to start the inning. She later advanced to third off an Addyson Alber walk and Tautges getting hit by a pitch. Laughlin then scored after a passed ball by SNU. 

The Peacocks added their final run of the game during the fifth inning. Alderson connected for a double towards center field to start the inning, before later being brought home off a Proud single that landed in center field. The Crimson Storm held on to win, 6-2.

Proud posted an RBI and a hit, while Laughlin scored a run and was walked. Alderson had a double, a hit and a run. Reid was on the mound for 5.1 innings, striking out two batters. She only allowed three hits and didn't allow an earned run.

Upper Iowa left four runners on base, walked twice and had four errors. Southern Nazarene left six runners on base.
