SIOUX CENTER, Iowa - Upper Iowa softball (1-9) dropped both games of its doubleheader in extra innings to Sioux Falls (S.D.) (2-4). UIU lost its first game to USF, 4-3, in nine innings and lost the second game, 5-4, in eight innings.
Dani Laughlin totaled three hits, a run, an RBI and three walks. Elliott Pomeroy had a hit, scored two runs, an RBI and a walk. Reagon Proud posted two hits, a run and a walk. Emma Tautges boasted one hit, two RBIs, and a walk.
The Peacocks play Southwest Minnesota State (3-3) on Feb. 15th at 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. SMSU split a pair of games with Minnesota State (3-1) on Feb. 14th, winning the first game, 9-4, but losing the second game, 9-8, in extra innings.
Sioux Falls 4, Upper Iowa 3
The Peacocks led most of the game, 2-1, until the seventh inning. Emma Kristof capped off the bottom of the inning with a sacrifice fly that allowed Sandra Ribich to score.
Runners were placed on second base to start extra innings. Taylor Hamaker was placed on second for Upper Iowa to start the eighth inning. Laughlin brought her home after singling towards left field. Sioux Falls knotted the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the inning after Addison Heule grounded out to second base, bringing home the runner from third base.
USF held UIU scoreless in the top of the ninth. Sioux Falls later took home the 4-3 victory in the bottom of the inning after Brianne Lawver's walk-off single to center field.
Laughlin had two hits, a run, an RBI and two walks. Kaylee Marhefke recorded an RBI, while Pomeroy scored a run. Dorothy Ziebell pitched six innings, allowing two runs and two hits. Mara Sivley pitched 2.2 innings, giving up two runs and three hits.
Huele had two RBIs and hit for the Cougars. Andie Suhai and Lawver each connected for two hits. Maddi Duncan was on the mound for nine innings, giving up three runs and three hits. She also struck out eight batters.
The Peacocks posted three hits, left seven on base, and walked eight times. The Cougars had 11 hits and left seven on base. Upper Iowa recorded one error, while Sioux Falls recorded two errors.
Sioux Falls 5, Upper Iowa 4
UIU held a 4-2 advantage throughout the first six and a half innings. USF sent the game into extra innings after scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Kristof drove in the first run with a single, scoring the runner from third base. Kyra Knudston followed with a single of her own to plate the runner from second.
The Cougars won 5-4, after not allowing the Peacocks to score in the top of the eighth inning and getting the winning run in the bottom of the inning. Suhai hit a walk-off single out to right field to win.
Tautges totaled a hit, two RBIs and a walk. Farnam had a hit and scored a run. Jescie Comstock recorded two hits and an RBI. Sara Reid pitched 7.1 innings, allowing five runs and 12 hits. She also struck out two batters.
Kristof had two RBIs, two hits and a run for USF. Suhai totaled two hits, a run and an RBI. Lauryn Foudree was on the mound for 6.2 innings, giving up four runs and eight hits. She struck out two batters as well.
Upper Iowa posted nine hits, left 10 runners on base and walked five times. Sioux Falls finished with 12 hits, left on six runners on base and walked twice. There were zero errors in the game.
