UIU softball falls in a pair of pitcher's duels at Rogers State Festival

Upper Iowa loses 3–0 to No. 18 Rogers State and 1–0 to Southwestern Oklahoma State despite strong pitching from Ziebell and Reid

CLAREMORE, Okla. - Peacock softball (0-5) fell to No. 18 Rogers State (4-2), 3-0, and to Southwestern Oklahoma State (1-5), 1-0, on Saturday in the Rogers State Festival. Dorothy Ziebell had a solid day batting and pitching. 

Ziebell connected on two hits, including a double on day one. She also slashed .400/.500/.600. The Austin, Texas native also pitched six innings on the mound, where she struck out two batters and only allowed three runs to the Hillcats. 

Sara Reid added to the positive pitching production from the Peacocks. The senior pitched six innings, striking out two batters while only allowing one run. 

Upper Iowa plays against Southern Nazarene (2-4) in its first doubleheader of the season on Sunday. The first game is at 10 a.m. and the second game is at 12 p.m.

Rogers State 3, Upper Iowa 0
The Hillcats scored the first run of the game in the second inning off a single by Emma Young that allowed the runner on second base to score. Rogers State increased its lead to 2-0 in the fourth off a single towards left field, driving in another runner from second base. 

RSU recorded its final run of the game at the bottom of the sixth after Young hit a sacrifice fly to center field that sent the runner from third home. Upper Iowa was held scoreless in the top of the seventh as Roger State held on to win, 3-0. 

Kaitlin Foral, Dani Laughlin and Ziebell each recorded a hit for the Peacocks. Ziebell smacked a double in the fourth inning. Foral and Ziebell both walked once. Ziebell also pitched six innings and threw two strikeouts while giving up seven hits and three runs. 

Ankeny native Mariah Belzer had two hits and two runs for the Hillcats. Young had two RBIs along with a hit. Pitcher Kinsley Hill was on the mound for four innings, striking out five batters. She gave up three hits while improving to 2-0 on the mound. 

Upper Iowa left five batters on base, posted three hits and was walked twice. Rogers State left six batters on base, had seven hits and was walked twice. 

Southwestern Oklahoma State 1, Upper Iowa 0
The Bulldogs scored the game's only run during the third inning. Southwestern Oklahoma State started the inning with two straight outs, until freshman Landry Bayless connected for a solo home run out to center field. 

UIU's best opportunity to score was in the first inning. After Laughlin walked, Ziebell got her to third base with a two-out single to right field, marking the only hit of the day for the Peacocks. A strikeout by Southwestern Oklahoma's Alexis Taylor got the Bulldogs out of the inning. 

Reid played solid six innings on the mound, striking out two Bulldogs. She allowed six hits and one run. Ziebell recorded the Peacocks' only hit of the game, while Laughlin, Addyson Alber and Reagon Proud reached on walks. 

Upper Iowa had 21 at-bats, recorded one hit, was walked three times and left four on base. Southwestern Oklahoma State was at the plate 25 times, connected for six hits and left six on base. Both teams recorded an error in the contest.
