INDIANAPOLIS - Eliana Callies (160) was named the James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award recipient for Upper Iowa women's wrestling, as announced by the GLVC (Great Lakes Valley Conference) on Friday. She is UIU's first recipient of this award in program history.
The GLVC James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award honorees are student-athletes who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. These individuals must also be in good academic standing while also demonstrating good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting. Callies is now eligible to become one of UIU's two Spalding Sportsmanship Award winners, which will be announced at the end of the academic year.
The freshman won 21 of her 40 matches this season, including two in the NCAA Women's Region V Tournament. Her best finish came at the Grand View Open, where she placed second after winning four matches, three by fall and one by tech fall. In the first-ever home event, she defeated Baylie Wehmeyer of Morningside and Grace Rinehardt of Luther by fall, helping the Peacocks to a 2-0 finish.
