Peacock softball drops pair of games to SMSU

Tautges totals a team-high three hits through both contests

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa  - UIU softball (1-11) lost both games against Southwest Minnesota State (5-3). Upper Iowa was beaten, 7-0, in game one and was beaten, 8-0, in five innings in game two. 

The Peacocks participate in the Lewis Flyers Dome Invitational on Feb. 19-21. UIU starts on Thursday, Feb. 19, against Purdue Northwest at 11 a.m. and Wisconsin-Parkside at 3:30 p.m.

The Mustangs recorded their first two runs of the game in the first inning off a Jordyn Marsh single that brought home the runners on second and third base. The team took a 5-0 advantage after adding three more runs in the inning. 

SMSU won, 7-0, after scoring two more runs in the second. Both runs came off singles by Emma Humpal and Marsh. 

Emma Tautges connected on two hits. Dani Laughlin, Jescie Comstock and Taylor Hamaker each had a hit. Cara Farnam was on the mound for six innings, allowing seven runs and 10 hits, while striking out two batters. 

Marsh totaled 3 RBIs, two hits and a run for Southwest Minnesota State. Lexi Ingalls posted two RBIs, a hit and a run. Marsh also earned her third win on the mound after pitching seven innings, giving up five hits. She struck out 11 batters at the plate. 

UIU had five hits, was walked once and left five on base. SMSU recorded 10 hits, four walks and left six on base. There were zero errors in the contest. 

Southwest Minnesota State 8, Upper Iowa 0 (5 Inn.)
The Mustangs tallied the first run of the game at the bottom of the first. The run came off a Humpal double towards right-center field that allowed the first base runner to score. SMSU added two runs in the second, one in the third and one in the fourth to take a 6-0 lead.

The final blow came in the fifth inning. Carley Stych hit a game-winning bunt that allowed the second and third base runners to cross home plate after a Peacock error. Southwest Minnesota State took home the 8-0 win in five innings. 

Laughlin, Tautges, Reagon Proud, Farnam and Kaylee Marhefke all had a hit. Comstock was walked one time. Mara Sivley pitched for 4.1 innings, allowing eight runs and seven hits. The freshman also struck out one batter. 

Humpal recorded three RBIs, two hits, and a run. Riley Kramolisch and Ingalls each found home twice. Ramsey Hopp was on the mound for five innings, allowing five hits and striking out three batters. 

The Peacocks posted five hits, a walk and were left four on base. The Mustangs mustered eight hits, three walks and left five on base. UIU had the only two errors of the game.
