QUINCY, Ill. - Upper Iowa men's wrestling (7-6) finished third at the GLVC Championships on Sunday. The Peacocks fell to Maryville (11-10) by a score of 25-17 in the semifinals, but responded with a 30-11 win over No. 25 UIndy (5-8) in the third-place match.
Ethen Doty (149) and Nick Mueller (165) both went 2-0 for the Peacocks on the day. Doty, the No. 8-ranked wrestler at 149 pounds, won with a tech fall against Leo Buchheit of Maryville, 18-0. He also picked up a 1-0 decision win over NWCA No. 11 Gavin Garcia.
Mueller won in a major decision over Maryville's Mustafa Salimi, 11-1. He then picked up a 2-1 decision win over UIndy's Logan Farnell.
Dawson Schmit (133), Tanner Arjes (141), Griffin Luke (174), Braxten Westendorf (184) and Matthew Marcum (197) all went 1-1 on the day. Collin Altensey (157) won his lone match of the day against Michael Ortega of UIndy with a 16-1 tech fall.
No. 8 McKendree (Ill.) (16-5) defeated Maryville, 20-18, in the championship match to take first place. This marked the Bearcats second-straight GLVC Tournament Championship.
The Peacocks have two weeks off before the NCAA Super Region V Championships on Saturday, Feb. 28, hosted by Southwest Minnesota State in Marshall, Minnesota.
Semifinal: Maryville 25, Upper Iowa 17
Treyton Ackman fell to Elijah Almarinez, and Schmit came up just short in a 5-4 decision against JP Homfeld, putting the Peacocks down 9-0 early. Arjes responded with a 10-9 win against Caleb Carter to get UIU on the board. The redshirt freshman finished 2-0 against Carter this season.
Doty picked up an 18-0 tech fall against Leo Buchheit, Preston Klostermann fell in a major decision to Nicolas Zamora and Mueller used three takedowns to pick up an 11-1 decision over Salimi. The Peacocks trailed 13-12 heading into the 174 match, a rematch between No. 14 Cole Ritter and Luke.
Ritter avenged his upset loss in the previous matchup, defeating Luke in an 8-4 decision. Ritter tallied takedowns in the first and third periods to get the win. Westendorf responded in the 184 match, totaling four takedowns and a four-point nearfall to win, 17-2, in the second period.
That put the Peacocks up 17-16 heading into the final two matches. Marcum battled against No. 15 Jeremiah Larson, but fell in a 6-3 decision. Larson got two takedowns in the match while staving off Marcum's late takedown attempts. Hunter Bye fell to Open Mat No. 8 Jonovan Smith in the final five seconds of the match, sealing the Saints' 25-17 win.

Third Place Match: Upper Iowa 30, UIndy 11
Ackman got a win by forfeit at 125. After a scoreless first period, Schmit recorded an escape and takedown in the second to take a 4-1 lead on Jadon Gyan. The Peacock redshirt sophomore added two more takedowns and a two-point nearfall in the third to get the 12-3 major decision.
Arjes fell in a 6-3 decision to Zach Haughton at 141. Doty recorded a second-period escape and didn't allow Garcia to score in the third period to win, 1-0. Altensey recorded three takedowns and a four-point nearfall to win with a tech fall, 16-1, over Micheal Ortega at 157.
At 165, Mueller trailed 1-0 to Luke Farnell entering the third period. After being held down for a minute, Mueller recorded a reversal and held his position for a 2-1 win. At 174 pounds, Luke came close to a tech fall against Luke Robards, but was a point short with a 17-3 major decision. Luke recorded five takedowns in the win that put UIU up 25-3 in the team score.
UIndy's Christian Chavez, ranked No. 19 in The Open Mat, defeated Westendorf in an 8-4 decision. Chavez recorded a takedown and 3-point nearfall in the first period.
Marcum shut out Armen Koltookian with a 15-0 tech fall, recording three four-point nearfalls in the second period. NWCA No. 11 Cale Gray defeated Jose Del Toro with an 18-2 second-period tech fall to wrap up the heavyweight match.
