FAYETTE, Iowa - The Peacock baseball team (1-2) heads to Wichita, Kansas, for four games against the Newman Jets (1-4). After a schedule change, the teams will play a doubleheader on Friday at 12 p.m., one game on Saturday at 2 p.m., and one game on Sunday at 12 p.m.
There is rain forecasted on Friday evening and Saturday in Wichita. In the event a game can't be played that day, Saturday's game will be moved to Sunday for a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT
The Peacocks started the season in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, against Northeastern State this past weekend. UIU went 1-2, winning the final game vs. the Riverhawks by a score of 10-4.Â
Kyle Hrncir led the Peacocks on the mound by throwing five strikeouts in four innings and allowing one earned run. He got the first win of the season as a pitcher in his appearance. Hudson Ivey and Landon Boisen each pitched an inning in relief, both throwing two strikeouts.Â
Thane Meiners led the Peacock bats, slashing .417/.500/.667. He totaled five hits with three doubles and three RBIs. Brock Zimmer had four hits with a home run and scored four times. Paul Safranski recorded three hits with a team-high four RBIs.Â
JJ Vargas knocked a home run in game one and scored a team-best five runs. Vargas, Cael Luzum and Gabe Bombardier all tallied three hits, with Vargas and Bombardier both having doubles.Â
AROUND THE GLVC
Quincy (Ill.), Drury (Mo.) and Illinois Springfield have all started the season unbeaten. Quincy swept Christian Brothers (Tenn.) in a four-game series while Drury swept Alabama Huntsville and won a midweek game against Central Missouri. UIS swept Savannah State (Ga.) in a three-game series.Â
Southwest Baptist (Mo.) (2-2) and Missouri-St. Louis (2-3) have both won a pair of games. Maryville (Mo.), McKendree (Ill.) and UIndy each have one win. Lewis (Ill.), Lincoln (Mo.), Missouri S&T, Rockhurst (Mo.), Truman State (Mo.) and William Jewell (Mo.) have not started their seasons yet.Â
Drury swept the first GLVC Player of the Week awards of the season. Outfielder Connor Bain won Player of the Week after batting .571 with a home run in the three-game sweep. Coleman Morrison won pitcher of the week after throwing five shutout innings without allowing a hit.Â
ABOUT THE JETS
Newman defeated Northwestern Oklahoma State (5-5) on Feb. 3 before being swept in a four-game series by MSU Denver (7-0) at home this past weekend. The Jets scored three runs in the 10th inning to get the win over NWOSU.Â
Seniors Kaynan Kaku and Justin Birch are both hitting over .400 this season. Kaku has seven hits in 17 at-bats with three doubles. Birch has eight hits in 20 at-bats with two doubles and the team's lone home run. They each have three RBIs this season.Â
Anthony Cannavino has three hits with a double and an RBI. Redshirt senior Louis Coca is batting .211, but has four hits with a double and three RBIs.Â
On the mound, senior right-handed pitcher Alex Gillig has pitched a team-high 10.1 innings. He has a 2.61 ERA with five strikeouts, nine hits and seven walks. Frank Fabian, a junior right-handed pitcher, has pitched 7.1 innings with three strikeouts.Â
Head coach Lance Songberg is in his first season with the Jets. He was previously an assistant coach and pitching coach for Southeastern University (Fla.). Before that, he spent three seasons as an assistant coach at William Jewell, helping the Cardinals have three straight 30+ win seasons.
