FAYETTE, Iowa. - Peacock men's basketball (14-6, 9-4 GLVC) snapped a three-game losing streak on Saturday after beating Drury (Mo.) (10-11, 5-8 GLVC), 96-76. Jack Miller recorded a career-high 25 points, shooting 9-for-12 (75%) from the field, while Trey Lewis added 13 points, breaking the 1,000-point barrier in his career.
Upper Iowa began the game by shooting 8-of-12 from the field to take a 20-8 lead with 13 minutes left in the first half. DU shot 3-for-11 (27.2%) from the floor. Kyle Hrncir, Miller and Lewis each scored five points during the run. Lewis also had two steals early in the run, creating the Peacocks' first four points of the game.
Upper Iowa eventually took a 33-13 lead off a layup by Miller with seven minutes to go. Drury cut the lead down to 12 two minutes later with a 10-2 run aided by six points from Zach Howell. UIU extended its lead back to 21 with 1:42 left, answering Drury's run with a 13-4 spurt of its own. Lewis capped off the run with a 3-pointer, helping the senior break 1,000 career points.
The Panthers trimmed the deficit to 14 with 18 seconds remaining after two three-pointers and a layup. With four seconds left, Tate Petersen's three-point attempt came up short, but Hrncir secured the offensive rebound and converted a short midrange jumper as time expired.
The Peacocks started the first four minutes of the second half by shooting 5-of-9 (55.6%) from the field and 2-of-4 (50%) from beyond the arc to take a 62-40 advantage. DU shot 3-of-8 (37.5%) and 0-of-1 from three during that stretch. Lewis hit a jumpshot and dished out assists to Miller and Petersen on made 3-pointers.
Upper Iowa kept the momentum rolling throughout the half, only allowing Drury to cut the deficit to 15 during the last 16 minutes of the game. The Peacocks got their largest lead of the night of 25 points with 3:54 left after Hrncir converted an and-one opportunity to ice the game. Cael Riechter and Ashton Hermann scored Upper Iowa's last four points of the game to win, 96-76.
UIU played a total of 14 players. All five of the Peacocks' starters scored double figures with Miller scoring 25, Petersen scoring 17, Hrncir scoring 14, Lewis scoring 13 and Reichter adding 10. Hermann, Anton Fontin, and Zach Erwin all recorded four points. Austin Hilmer scored three points and Joe Bean scored two.
Erwin led the team with a season-high nine rebounds, while Reichter and Hrncir had eight rebounds. Miller had five rebounds and Lewis had four rebounds. Bean, Reichter and Lewis recorded two steals. Hrncir, Miller, Petersen and Erwin all recorded a steal.
Hrncir had a team-high seven assists and Lewis followed with six. Miller and Reichter posted three assists, while Eric Kenesie and Hermann posted two. Petersen had a season-high two blocks, while Erwin and Bean also each recorded a block. Hrncir had a team-high seven fouls drawn, and Reichter had four fouls drawn.
Zach Howell led Drury in scoring with 20 points, shooting 8-for-8 from the free-throw line. KeShaun Thomas recorded a team-best seven rebounds. Colin Hardrick had a team-high five assists.
UIU outscored DU in the paint, 46-24, and on second chance opportunities, 26-13. However, the Panthers scored 27 bench points, while the Peacocks scored 17. There was a total of 43 fouls in the game, 24 by UIU and 19 by DU.
Upper Iowa made 36-of-75 (48%) shot attempts, 13-of-19 (68.4%) free throws and 11-of-37 (29.7%) 3-pointers. Drury shot 24-for-57 (42.1%) from the field, 21-for-32 (65.6%) from the free-throw line and 7-for-21 (33.3%) from beyond the arc.
Upper Iowa hits the next week to face No. 16 Missouri S&T (14-4, 8-3 GLVC) on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. and Lincoln (Mo.) (8-13, 2-11 GLVC) on Saturday at 3 p.m. On Saturday, the Miners beat Lewis (Ill.) (4-16, 2-10 GLVC), 90-59, and the Blue Tigers lost to UIndy (11-10, 9-4 GLVC), 101-73. UIU won both contests against S&T and Lincoln in December in Fayette.
