ROLLA, Mo. - UIU men's basketball (14-7, 9-5 GLVC) lost to No. 24 Missouri S&T (15-4, 9-3 GLVC) on Thursday night, 88-71. Kyle Hrncir recorded his 10th double-double of the season and surpassed 1000 points in his career.
The redshirt junior scored 19 points, going 7-of-14 (50%) on his shot attempts. Hrncir also had 10 rebounds, three assists and one steal. He hit 1000 career points after scoring a layup with 11:06 left in the first half, making him the 32nd player in program history to accomplish the feat at Upper Iowa.
The Miners jumped out to a 58-46 lead eight minutes into the second half, shooting 8-for-14 (57.1%) from the field in that eight minutes. The Peacocks were 3-for-10 (30%) from the field during the stretch. S&T's leading scorer during the run was Andrew Young with seven.
Upper Iowa began to scratch Missouri S&T's 10-point advantage after Tate Petersen drained a shot from beyond the arc to make the score 62-55 with 8:19 left. Cameron Stovall made a layup a minute and a half later to increase S&T's lead back to nine. Petersen buried another three on the other side of the court, bringing the Peacocks back to within six.
Stovall later hit a jumper with 6:43 to increase the Miners' lead to 68-60. This sparked a stretch where S&T shot 4-for-4 from the field over the next two minutes, extending the lead to12 points. UIU only shot 1-for-3 from the field during this time. The Miners controlled the game the rest of the way and took home the 88-71 win after making their final three shots of the game.
After S&T led 6-5 early, Hrncir hit a 3-pointer that sparked a 12-0 run over the next two minutes, taking a 17-6 lead. UIU was 3-for-3 from the field, 2-for-2 from three and 4-for-4 from the free-throw line during this run, with Cael Reichter adding six points.
The Miners later closed the Peacocks' lead down to six with 7:34 left in the half. A minute later, S&T hit two layups to lessen the deficit to 25-23.
Upper Iowa answered on the next possession with a layup by Hrncir, then it forced a turnover, and Tate Petersen capitalized on the other end with a three to take a 30-23 lead with 5:42 left.
The Peacocks held the slim lead over the next two minutes until the Miners' Andrew Young hit a 3-pointer to knot the game at 32-32 apiece. S&T took its second lead of the half after hitting a layup, and then extended its lead to 37-32 after hitting a three with 3:10 to go.
10 seconds later, Trey Lewis knocked down a jumper to bring Upper Iowa within two. Reichter tied the game a minute and a half later with a layup. Missouri S&T's Cameron Stovall converted an and-one opportunity with forty seconds left in the half, giving the Miners a 40-37 lead into halftime.
Reichter recorded 16 points, shooting 6-for-6 from the charity stripe. The freshman added a career-high four assists along with eight rebounds and a block. Petersen posted 11 points, two assists, a rebound and a steal. Lewis had eight points, two rebounds, two assists and a steal.
The Miners had three guys score 20 or more points. Young scored 22, Stovall scored 21 and Blaise Beauchamp scored 20. Stovall also led the team in rebounds with seven.
Upper Iowa shot 26-for-64 (40.6%) from the floor, 9-for-24 (37.5%) from beyond the arc and 10-for-14 (71.4%) from the free-throw line. Missouri S&T was 35-of-68 (51.5%) from the field, 4-of-13 (30.8%) from three and 14-of-17 (82.4%) from the charity stripe.
S&T controlled the glass, 39-31, and the paint, 62-32. The Miners also scored 35 bench points to the Peacocks' 12. There were 30 fouls in the game, 16 by UIU and 14 by S&T.
Upper Iowa wraps up the road trip on Saturday against Lincoln (Mo.) (9-13, 3-11 GLVC) at 3 p.m. The Blue Tigers beat Lewis (Ill.) (4-17, 2-11 GLVC) 84-68 on Thursday.
