Homecoming week brings two home matches for Peacock women’s soccer

UIU faces Truman State on Wednesday before Sunday’s Pink Out against Drury

FAYETTE, Iowa - Peacock women's soccer (0-8-3, 0-8-1) celebrates the homecoming festivities with games against Truman State (Mo.) (4-4-4, 3-3-3 GLVC) and Drury (Mo.) (2-5-5, 2-3-3 GLVC) this week. The Peacocks face the Bulldogs on Wednesday at 5 p.m. and the Panthers on Sunday for a "Pink Out" game at 11 a.m.

LAST TIME OUT
UIU fell in two road matchups to Illinois Springfield (6-4-1, 4-3-1 GLVC) and Southwest Baptist (Mo.) (4-6-2, 2-5-1 GLVC) this past week. Meghan Zwicker led the Peacocks with two shots on the week, both against the Bearcats. Giovanna Alexa Garcia, Aubrey Carlson,  Maryn Hudson, Grace Kotewa, Ava Talmadge-Anderson, Natasha Toxqui and Catherine Wolf all had a shot as well. 

Freshman Suzette Orta appeared in both games at goalkeeper for the Peacocks. She totaled six saves on the weekend. Sienna Johnson started the first game against the Prairie Stars and made eight saves. 

STATISTICS SUMMARY
Hudson leads the Peacocks offensively with three goals on eight shots (six on goal). Haylie Hutchinson has scored a goal with two assists for four points. Giovanna Alexa Garcia has a goal, an assist, eight shots and five shots on goal this season.

Sophomore goalkeeper Avery Harding has totaled a team-high 84 saves this season and averages 9.33 per game. She leads the conference in both categories and ranks second in the nation in total saves and fourth in the nation in saves per game. 

Junior defender Taylor Marie Inocelda-Bihag leads the team in minutes played with 918. Zwicker has played 816 minutes, and Stephany Castillo has played 794 minutes. 

AROUND THE GLVC
Missouri-St. Louis (8-1-2, 7-0-1 GLVC) leads the conference with 22 points, staying undefeated in GLVC play with only a 0-0 tie against Drury on Sept. 12. McKendree (Ill.) (11-1, 7-1 GLVC) is in second place and has a league-best seven-game win streak. 

Maryville (Mo.) (6-4-2, 6-1-1 GLVC) has won four games and is in third place with 19 points. Rockhurst (Mo.) (8-2-1, 6-2 GLVC) is in fourth with 18 points, and Missouri S&T (6-3-2, 5-2-2 GLVC) is in fifth with 17 points. Maryville defeated Rockhurst, 2-1, this past weekend in a pivotal game near the top of the conference.

ABOUT THE BULLDOGS
Truman State lost 4-0 on Saturday to first-place UMSL, but started the week with a scoreless draw against Southwest Baptist. Before a loss to McKendree on Sept. 26, the Bulldogs had won three straight with wins against Illinois Springfield, Lincoln (Mo.) (3-6-1, 2-5-1 GLVC) and William Jewell (Mo.) (0-9-2, 0-6-2 GLVC). 

Senior forward Quinn Nauman leads the team with two goals and two assists for six points. She's totaled 23 shots with 12 on goal. Midfielder Aubrey Kaupas and forward Lizzy Peng each have two goals and an assist. Junior Mackenzie Wright has totaled two goals, and sophomore Madison Blomenkamp has a goal and an assist. 

Goalkeeper Mikayla Thomas has started 10 matches for the Bulldogs, recording 47 saves. She has a team-high 79.7% save percentage. She ranks fifth in the GLVC in goals against, sixth in save percentage and seventh in saves per game. Thomas has totaled a GLVC-leading four shutouts this season. 

Mike Cannon has been coaching Truman State women's soccer since 1993. He's accumulated 379 wins entering this season, which ranks fifth among active Division II head coaches. 

ABOUT THE PANTHERS
Drury has not won a game since Sept. 19 against UIndy (1-9, 1-8 GLVC), as the Panthers have two one-goal losses to Lewis (Ill.) (5-6-1, 4-4-1 GLVC) and Missouri S&T and draws against Missouri Western (6-2-4) and Quincy (Ill.) (4-3-5, 4-2-3 GLVC) since then.

Freshman midfielder Carly Swan has scored a team-high four goals this season with 25 shots and eight on goal. She's tied for seventh in the GLVC in goals. Another freshman, Melissa Higgins, has three goals with an assist. She's added 21 shots, with nine on goal. 

Junior Keira Love has scored two goals on 10 shots this season. Both senior midfielder Leah McDonald and sophomore defender Mia Smith have three a team-high three assists this season. McDonald has added 14 shots, the third-most on the team. 

Senior goalkeeper Katy Fitzler has started all 12 games for the Panthers, totaling 33 saves and a 68.8% save percentage. She also has two shutouts this season, ranking fourth in the GLVC. Fitzler ranks seventh in the conference in goals against, with 1.29 per game. 

Head coach Justin Olson is in his seventh season with the Panthers. He has a 67-29-32 record with the Panthers, including a 48-18-33 record in GLVC play.
