Peacock women's soccer succumbs to the Bearcats on Saturday

Senior Zwicker had two shots, with one on goal during the 71st minute of the game

BOLIVAR, Mo. - Upper Iowa (0-8-3, 0-8-1 GLVC) women's soccer fell, 2-0, to Southwest Baptist (Mo.) (4-6-2, 2-5-1 GLVC) on Saturday. Defender Meghan Zwicker recorded two shots, with one on goal during the 71st minute. 

Annabelle Shuler scored SBU's first goal in the seventh minute. Juana Calvo Fernandez was credited with the assist. 

Maryn Hudson attempted to answer for UIU four minutes later. The freshman took a shot towards the bottom center of the net, but was stopped by goalkeeper Cece Alexander. 

Fernandez Calvo netted her own goal to give the Bearcats a 2-0 lead off a pass from Shuler in the 19th minute of the game. Midfielder Ava Talmadge-Anderson took a shot two minutes later for the Peacocks. Her shot went right above the goal.

Southwest Baptist held onto the 2-0 victory. A total of 13 shots were taken in the second period. UIU posted four shots, while SBU posted nine. Midfielder Natasha Toxqui even attempted a blocked shot during the 87th minute of the game. 

Goalkeeper Suzette Orta saved three shots in her first start as a Peacock. Zwicker took two shots, with one on goal. Talmadge-Anderson, Hudson and Toxqui each recorded a shot. Orta and Zwicker, along with defenders Rhea Buchanan and Stephany Castillo, all played 90 minutes. 

Shuler had four shots, a goal and an assist for SBU. Fernandez Calvo totaled three shots with two on goal, a goal and an assist. Shuler took three shots with one on goal. 

Southwest Baptist outshot Upper Iowa, 15-6. UIU had two shots on goal, while SBU had six. Each team took five corner kicks. 

The contest featured 21 total fouls. The Bearcats committed 12 fouls and the Peacocks committed nine. 

Upper Iowa returns to Harms-Escheid on Wednesday, Oct. 7, to take on Truman State (Mo.) (4-3-4, 3-2-3 GLVC) at 5 p.m. UIU then hosts Drury (Mo.) (2-5-5, 2-3-3 GLVC) on Sunday, Oct. 11 at 11 a.m.
