Peacock women’s basketball flocks to Missouri for battles with birds

UIU prepping for William Jewell on Thursday and Rockhurst on Saturday

FAYETTE, Iowa - Upper Iowa women's basketball (8-9, 4-5 GLVC) heads south to battle against William Jewell (Mo.) (0-15, 0-9 GLVC) and Rockhurst (Mo.) (6-9, 2-7 GLVC). The Peacocks face the Cardinals at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 22, and the Hawks at 12 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 24.

LAST TIME OUT
The Peacocks fell to Quincy (Ill.) and Truman State (Mo.) this past weekend. Ellie Foster nearly had a double-double against Quincy, and Ava Privet totaled a career-high in points against Truman State. 

UIU never led in the second half against Quincy. The team came within one possession of the Hawks seven times, but could never convert to tie or take the lead. Foster led Upper Iowa with 11 points and a season-high nine rebounds in the 58-54 loss. 

Privet started the game hot, scoring nine of UIU's first 11 points, and later 18 of the team's first 28 points. Kendyl Lodermeier scored 16 points with a season-high nine rebounds in the 77-63 loss. 

STATISTICAL LEADERS
Foster leads the team averaging 12.5 points per game, while Privet bumped her average up to 12.1 points per game. Foster is adding 3.6 rebounds, 1.4 assists, 1.3 steals and is shooting 40% from the field. She ranks 15th in the GLVC in scoring. 

Privet adds 4.1 rebounds, 1.6 assists and a steal per game. She shoots 43.3% from the field and 41.5% from behind the arc. Foster and Privet lead the GLVC in 3-point field goals per game, while Privet is third in 3-point field goal percentage. 

Lodermeier is adding 9.9 points per game, 4.2 rebounds per game and is shooting 51.1% from the field. The freshman is seventh in the GLVC in field goal percentage. Bryar Duwe adds nine points, 5.1 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game. 

Sydnee Nelson is averaging seven points per game, 4.1 rebounds per game and 3.9 assists per game. She is second in the GLVC in assists per game and is third in assist/turnover ratio (1.7). Lindsey Davis has averaged 7.1 points in eight games of action this season. 

As a team, the Peacocks are averaging 64.5 points per game while giving up 67.1 points per game. Those marks rank 10th and ninth in the conference, respectively. UIU is fourth in 3-point percentage (34.2%) in the conference. 

AROUND THE GLVC
Missouri-St. Louis (14-2, 10-0 GLVC) remains the top team in the conference this season after beating Missouri S&T (7-7, 3-5 GLVC) and Lincoln (Mo.) (4-12, 2-7 GLVC) this past weekend. Maryville (Mo.) (14-4, 8-2 GLVC) has the second-best record in conference play and Drury (Mo.) (10-6, 7-2 GLVC) has the third-best.

Lewis (Ill.) (10-6, 6-2 GLVC) is on a conference-best eight-game winning streak. McKendree (Ill.) (9-6, 6-3 GLVC), Truman State and Quincy all have three losses in conference play. Upper Iowa is tied for the eighth-best conference record with Illinois Springfield (7-10, 4-5 GLVC). 

UMSL's Mara Rieder leads the GLVC in scoring, averaging 20.7 points per game. Kayla Rice of Illinois Springfield is averaging 16.1 points per game, and Laini Joseph of Lincoln is scoring 15.9 points per game. 

McKendree leads the conference in scoring offense with 76.2 points per game, while Missouri-St. Louis leads in scoring defense at 52.9 points per game. UMSL has the largest average point margin in the GLVC at 14.6 points.  

ABOUT THE CARDINALS - Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
William Jewell has yet to win a game this season, losing both of its games to UIndy (3-14, 2-7 GLVC) and Lewis this past weekend. The Cardinals' closest loss was to Southwest Baptist (Mo.) (5-10, 2-7 GLVC) on Dec. 4. 

Junior forward Syderah Farmer is averaging 9.2 points per game and a team-high 5.8 rebounds per game. Freshman guard Jalea Price is adding 8.2 points per game, and sophomore Alex McGarrah is averaging 7.3 points per game. 

As a team, the Cardinals average 48.3 points per game while giving up 74.4 points per game, both ranking last in the GLVC. William Jewell is eighth in combined rebounds per game, averaging 35.1 as a team. 

Head coach Jenni Croy is in her first season with the Cardinals. The Kearney, Missouri, native spent 18 years at North Central Missouri College before taking the job, totaling over 320 wins. 

ABOUT THE HAWKS - Saturday at 12 p.m.
Rockhurst enters this weekend on a four-game losing streak after a 50-point loss to Illinois Springfield and a four-point loss to UIndy this past weekend. RU's last win was vs. Southwest Baptist on Jan. 4 by 22 points.

Junior forward Tori Miller leads the team in scoring, averaging 13.2 points per game. She's adding 4.6 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.1 steals per game. In the conferences, she's 12th in scoring, 11th in assists and fourth in steals.

Macie Conway adds 12.1 points per game during the guard's senior campaign. She adds 1.2 assists and 1.1 steals. Junior guards Ella Campbell and Keeley Steele are each averaging 7.5 points per game, with Steele dishing out 2.1 assists per game. Alivia McCulla is 11th in the GLVC in rebounds per game, averaging a team-high six per game. 

Rockhurst is sixth in the GLVC in defensive points per game at 63.4 and 12th in offensive points per game at 60.9. The Hawks are fourth in opposing field goal percentage (37.3%), third in turnover margin (3.6) and first in blocked shots (4.13/game) in the GLVC. 

Head coach Larry Park is in his 17th season as the head coach of the Hawks. Rockhurst has won 121 games over the past 10 seasons under his leadership.
